Paul's Story
Paul William Rothery
Paul William Rothery, 57, a resident of Portland and formerly of Arlington, The Dalles, Centralia and Honolulu, died of congestive heart failure in his apartment at the IOOF Odd Fellows Home on Monday, May 18, 2009.
He was born Nov. 1, 1951 in Ephrata, Wash., the first of two children, to John "Bill" William and Donna Jeannette (Watkins) Rothery.
He grew up in Washington and Oregon and attended school in Ephrata, East Wenatchee, Renton, Portland, Arlington, The Dalles, and Centralia, where he graduated in 1970. Despite having a high draft number at the height of the Vietnam war, Paul tried, but was unable due to a severe case of psoriasis, to enlist in the military.
He married Shirley Dian Lanahan on June 25, 1971, in Portland; they divorced a few years later. They had two daughters (Paul lovingly called them "my girls"), Paula Jeane Rothery and Melanie Marla Ann Rothery.
He attended the Laborers Training School in Salem Oregon and was a member of Laborers Local 320. He worked in the heavy construction industry in the Northwest for 12 years, was a custom wood craftsman in Honolulu for over a decade, managed a fresh orange juic...Expand for more
e store at the International Marketplace in Honolulu, and then was a long-haul truck driver, delivering fresh fruits and vegetables along the west coast until his retirement in 2001 due to disability.
He was raised in the Methodist church in his younger years.
He is survived by daughters Paula Jeane Rothery and Melanie Marla Ann Rothery, both of Oregon City; grandsons Raistlin Matthew William Rothery, Oregon City, and Benjamin Michael Christopher Hazard, Portland; he was looking forward to the birth of his first great-grandchild in October. He is also survived by his sister, Marla (and Ed) de Belloy Wosnak, La Pine; step-sisters Barb (and Roland) Hege-Cornell, Molalla; and Paula (and Lou) Burbach, Portland; nephews Brent and Richard de Belloy; an aunt and two uncles; many special cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Rose E. Rothery and step-brother, Kenneth M. Yowell.
Private family graveside service will be held at IOOF Threemile Cemetery in The Dalles at a later date. Cremated remains will be placed between the graves of his parents.
