College
BS Biology, Fordham U.
Foundations in learning. The Jesuits gave me a new respect for academic clergy and well thought out arguments. Limited resources in the lab taught me to do more with less. Lots of good memories of friends and classmates. First kiss and first hangover.
MS Physiology, U. Illinois
Excellent instructors gave me a good framework on how to think but dreadful guidance in doing research. I had good friends there to help me through the rough times.

my career. The graduate program was small enough that the faculty actually cared about their students. I took medical physiology with the last class Arthur Guyton taught before retiring.
Post-doctoral Fellowship at NIH
It was great doing research in the ivory tower and not having to worry about where the money was coming from. I had the time to work on things that intrigued me and in greater detail. Many of the faculty and staff were the best in their fields. My wife worked with Marshall Nirenburg, a Nobel prize laureate and true gentleman. It was funny that he was on a first name basis with my 6 year old son.
After finishing my postdoctoral fellowship I got a job at a biotech named R&D Systems in Minneapolis, MN doing biochemical assay development. It was #%^& cold in the winter but I enjoyed the work and the scenery was beautiful. It was not uncommon to see Bald Eagles flying over the house and Wild Turkeys stopping the school bus.
We moved from Minnesota to the San Francisco bay area in 2008. I am working at a small medical diagnostic test development company in San Carlos, Ca. Not having real seasons is taking some getting used to, but there are lots of new things to see and do as compensation.
