Paul's Story

Life I married Betty Edwards in 1971. She lived in Concord, CA and we met in college. It was the best thing that could happen to me. She loved me the way I was and that says a lot about her. We have been married over 48 years. Of course, though, she would say it doesn't seem like it has been a bit over 47 years. We have three grown children who are all married. Our daughter and her husband and two kids live in Downey. Our middle child and his wife and two kids live in Chico. Our youngest son and his wife live in La Habra. I graduated from college after we were married and after my stint in the U.S. Army. I got out in 1973 and went back to college in 1976. I graduated in 1980 from Cal State University at Dominguez Hills. In 2000, I decided to get better prepared for ministry which is my first love and highest priority after Betty. So I enrolled in seminary and graduated in 2003 with a Master's in Theology from Talbot School of Theology. Talbot is one of the Biola University schools. After graduation, I promptly enrolled in a Ph.D program at the same school which I completed in 2008. My topic area is church and ministry leadership - specifically leadership of growing churches and ministry. What sets leaders of growing churches apart from leaders of declining churches? That is the question I dealt with. . I have been fortunate to teach as an adjunct professor at the Masters level in Seminary and enjoyed it immensely. My current vocation is being a pastor of a local church. I also like teaching as adjunct profess...Expand for more
or for a local university. I am loving being a pastor of a church that is moving forward. Playing church is not interesting at all. I am serious about outreach and love others who are similar minded. My mom was bedfast and ill when she came to live with us many years ago. She died in 1993. She was 87 years old at her death. My brother John lives nearby in Norwalk, CA. He graduated from Bell High in 1964. We get together about once a week. His first wife died in 2004. He remarried and outlived his second wife, too. School When I think of Bell High school, I always think of Mrs. Frischknecht. Old Mrs. Frischknecht was the best (or worst) English teacher I ever had. She was the right teacher for me at the right time. I recall the stories of her baked monkey. Actually, I learned a lot from her. In fact, I think she liked me as a student. Mr. Rowland's compostions and literature classes were also some of my favorite classes. He challenged me to learn to write well. It has served me well over the years. Workplace I own a public accounting and tax firm in Downey, CA. It was started in 1975 so I've been doing that a long time. It is enjoyable because I like people and I love helping people. My avocation is being a pastor of a local church and teaching as an adjunct professor at a seminary. Military I went in the Army in 1971. My draft notice arrived at the end of 1970 and I went in almost immediately. I was honorably discharged in 1973 after a severe injury to one of my legs. I am glad to have served our country.
