Paul's Story

After graduation I quit my part time job at Herc's Buffet on 8 MI. Rd.and took to the beaches for the summer.Coming close to September my parents were becoming antsy about my future plans. I told them I would rather put off going to college immediately and work full time for a little while....yeah....sure!! It so happened that my best friend Bob Niemi had a relative working in the personnel dept. at the Ford Rouge Plant. I was hired and assigned to work the afternoon shift at the frame plant. Three monthes of production line work convinced me to find another job. I inquired and took some tests at Chrysler Eng. and was hired into Body Shop Administration as a file clerk. Some of my duties involved delivering info. to the individual body shops....wood shop, metal shop, plastic shop and paint shop.Having taken wood shop classes all through school I was fascinated when I would see those model makers building full size car parts out of wood!! After time the dog eat dog presence of office politics was wearing on me.I decided to try for an apprenticeship.Personnel said they could put me on a waiting list but it was long due to the Federal Govt. giving deferments to skilled trade apprentices. I was offered an apprenticeship from an automotive supplier and I accepted.----It was great! For the next 22 years I was not only a journeyman model maker ...Expand for more
but also through related training received an associate deg. in mech. eng. In the late 1980's wood model making by hand was all but obsolete. I decided to morph myself into becoming a clay modeler.Clay modeling deals almost exclusively in building concept vehicles. It was a very rewarding and fun occupation for the ensuing 20 years. Bringing my family down to the North American Auto Show at Cobo Hall to see the vehicles I helped build was unfogettable. In 2008 the bottom fell out of the American auto industry and I retired. I have no regrets. Thats not the whole story!! I have been married twice. My first wife was another S.H.S. grad...class of 64. Her name then was Nancy Ellsworth. We were married for ten years and had three sons together. No bad feelings. My second wife was a widow raising 1 boy and three daughters when I met her.I went from the My Three Sons scenerio to the Brady Bunch in short order! Pat and I have been together 32 years. I I am now a grandfather of 6 boys and 5 girls. I am sometimes hesitant when calling them by name!! (short term memory loss maybe!!) Besides Southfield I have lived awhile in Detroit,Walled Lake,Farmington and now settled about half way between Howell and Pinckney,MI.---I love it. It's like being up north every day of your life. Woods and nature and everything related to it.
