Paul's Story

I live in Wyandotte, four blocks from the hospital where I was born, Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital.. My schools included: Daniel J. Healy Elementary (Detroit). Frank Murphy Junior High (Detroit), Robert Frost Junior High (Livonia). Bentley High School (Livonia), I also attended Henry Ford Community College (Dearborn), Henry Ford's Management Center (Dearborn). Monroe Community College (numerous online courses), and the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Our grandchildren are a source of joy and pride. Sabrina is in her last semester at U of M Ann Arbor. Daivd is a senior in high school. Julia is now in the ninth grade. David has been asked to join the national honor society and continues to be our right- hand man and head laborer for all things in our house. Academically he's leaning towards becoming a mechanical engineer (my dad was a mechanical engineer). David is also taking two S.T.E.M.. courses this semester. He's also taking "Honors" (Advanced) Calculus.. David has his temporary driver's license now. So he wants to go everywhere. He is enthralled with all things automotive and has already done repairs on our 2000 Ford Ranger. He also repairs computers, lawnmowers , clocks, watches, and cameras, and other stuff. We figure that he feels he needs to keep our Ford Ranger in good repair because he has it earmarked as his first vehicle. It's a manual transmission and he is determined to master the clutch! We've let him take it out with his dad about a dozen times. He is in control of clutch now, he's a quick study. He now has his temporary license, and we are about to turn him loose on the streets. Watch out Wyandotte! More to come on him very soon. Oh yeah, as an end note, my grandson has very thick, light brown, wavy hair that is almost to his waist. There are a lot of jealous girls out there. He wears it in that boy bun thing (I refuse to call it a man bun). I'll never figure that "style" out. He is also taking advanced (honors) calculus. The youngest, Julia, is being inducted into the junior national honor society and has had the honor of having been asked to join the high school marching band even though she is an eighth-grader. She is preparing for a trip to New Orleans where the band will play in that city's Easter Parade. Julia received her report card, 03/22/2019, She earned all A's again with an. A+ in advanced math, A+ in music, and an A+ in Spanish. There will be more on her, later. Update on Julia, she has graduated from middle school with honors and a straight 4.0 for all three years. Even more important than any of their accomplishments is the fact that they are all nice kids. They are polite, respectful and responsible. Far from perfect, they have all inherited the family disease of extreme sarcasm and are not always kind to each other. They are all stubborn and determined to find things out on their own, We try to be their back up when their way doesn't turn out quite as they expect! We're very lucky to be in their lives. Our newest family update is the addition of our second Boxer. We've had this breed for twenty plus years and are convinced they are the greatest in the world. Our new guy is a rescue that was taken from an abusive situation. . Slowly but surely we are gaining his trust. We find it inconceivable that anyone would abuse a dog to the extent that all the dog expects is harm from his owners! Apollois his name and he, has become my best friend, for the most part., You can see some pictures of him in the gallery. He comes and lays on my chest and licks my head, face and my ears . I always keep a hand towel next to my bed. His affection towards me may having something to do with the fact that I'm the one who feeds him and gives him treats. Although, I'd like to think that it's more than just that. My bed has become his safe haven. He used to be caged for eight to ten hoiurs a day. I spend almost every waking hour with him and Max II . Max is older than Apollo by almost three years, Max is the most intelligent of all our Boxer's and we appreciate his help training Apollo. Apollo will now sit, sit pretty, lie down, stay, and shake. The dogs have become close friends. It's fun to watch them play. They play like big dogs, it's pretty immpressive.. Apollo still runs and hides when he sees me pick up a broom or my cane, BRIEF DISTRACTION: :I use the cane for balance. I've had three back surgeries On the first surgery the anesthesiologist didn't rotate my head, thus restricting blood flow to my optic nerves. I thought I was going to be totally blind. But I regained sight in my right eye but lost about 95 to 98 percent in my left eye. Iwear glasses with the left lens blackened. I have some peripheral vision that effects my balance. WE RETURN NOW TO OUR REGULAR SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING: It breaks my heart to think that anyone could treat a animal like that. Apollo's still skittish, but not anything ...Expand for more
like he was when we brought him home.. It will take him awhile to overcome his fear. .At our home, he gets loads of love, good food, and plenty of treats and grandkids to walk and play with him. . He's becoming a better dog and learning new behaviors. He's lucky to have three grandkids that are in love with him. We have high hopes for him, he is a smart and very loving dog. He'll never see the inside of a cage again. 08/10/2019 It's just a beard. Whatever happened to Belinda........ and getting old, I mean older. Okay, now let's get back to the depressing. We started with the depressing. So let's wrap it up with some of the same. At some point, if I can take a good picture, I will replace the current picture with an updated "Now" picture. Classmates sent me a message saying that "Fellow classmates wanted to see a current picture." I promise I wlil. ___________________________________________________________ Anyway, let's start with Belinda. Well, it all began in 1967. I don't really remember how we met. I liked Belinda a lot, she was a shy girl and really pretty. I remember walking her from class to class and carrying her books. I liked being with her as often as I could. She was my first real love. When we started attending Bentley we always walked to school together, holding hands.. We met every morning at a side door of Kennedy Elementary School. I always looked forward to my good morning kiss. The perfume she wore always made my head spin. That sweet female aroma penetrated my olfactory senses and I was in heaven. And, her hair smelled great and was so soft. You could say I was completely enamored with her. ( I actually carved our initials into the steel door. B.B. + P.K. inside a heart). I always carried her books to and from school. It was no problem. What I wouldn't do for love! I don't remember what we talked about. Although we did talk of marriage and children. know that Pat McNamara, her best friend, the girls always watched "Dark Shadows". I think it came on about three-thirty. We would begin our trek home talking about our classes. I carried her books and holding her hand. She had the softest hands and they always looked so pretty. When we got to Hubbard and, I think, Berwick. We would talk for a short while and kiss goodbye, until tomorrow. I really started to dislike "Dark Shadows" a lot. We talked on the phone most nights and it was so hard to say goodbye to her. I loved the sound of her voice. I would dream of her at night, as most young men did about their girlfriends. Every so often Belinda would come over to my house, that was always nice. Until that one day came when we broke up. I was devastated. But, there were other issues regarding me. It was my fault really. Belinda was a good girl and I was a bad boy. Even though I hurt deeply, it was for the best though. I quit school and join the counter culture revolution as fast and hard as I could. I partied as hard as you could without dropping dead. Early in 1972 I married Renee LaLonde, class of '73. I decided to join the Marine Corps. Renee joined me later that year in California. The Marine Corps straighten me out quickly. I became disciplined and loved the Corps. Renee didn't like the military life so I left to return home after my first enlistment I was married for two years before I left. I spent the next twenty-five years as a bachelor, that was fun. I met my wife, Jan, through a mutual friend for about ten years. We meet in Livonia. We got married on my parent's anniversary, December 5th (Parents 1944, during WWII). I always used to forget my parents anniversary, so I thought, why not kill two birds with one stone, it's worked marvelously ever since. Jan and I will be married for twenty-three years in December. Jan was not one of the real good girls, but she never did drugs and was highly organized, and very responsible, While in high school and college, she maintained good grades. She was an English Major. While I was in college she helped me write some papers. I always did three revisions. Jan could always sit down and write one paper and it would get an A, no corrections needed!! .Jan lived about three blocks away from my grandmother in Toledo. She worked, in Detroit as a General Manager for an insurance agency for twenty-four years. .Jan lived about three blocks away from my grandmother. SIDE NOTES: My dad was born in Toledo and my grandmother maintained a house there. for many years. Her father gave her a house. My great-grandfather owned six homes there, He was a business owner and engineer who owned a few metalworking shops. He was also in a film about "Germans who Built Toledo". (PBS) He's also included in some reference books in the Toledo Library. My father's side of the family came over from Germany. They were all engineers or chemists. I know this from doing research. I also had an aunt and uncle who lived in Toledo.
