Paul's Story

Welcome to the Classmates.com profile of Paul McCrummen. Well, It has been nearly two years since my last appearance here on Classmates. I am sorry to say that I did not make it to the 50th reunion a few months ago in Irvine. I saw a few of the photos that were posted and I would like to commend each of you who were on the steering committee. You did one heck of a job getting it all organized and it looks like all those who did attend had a great time getting re-acquainted with old friends. June, what can I say except offer my deepest apologies for not attending, despite your efforts and everyone else who contacted me and asked if I were going. It was very tempting and I thought long and hard about it. Maybe if we have a 60th reunion in 2028 I may be over my shock and sadness by then. I am astounded that I have 332 visits to my account here that I still have no idea who left them because they are still blurred out. So, whoever you are- I am NOT ignoring you. I just cannot see your name or photograph. I still have the same gitplayer2 e mail account and I am almost always on Facebook, although that could be the reason that none of ya'll have contacted me there. I have become good friends with Vicki Vaughn and we share many of our geopolitical insights with each other. I would really enjoy hearing from the rest of you, too.. I received a note from Wayne Beaver asking me if I remembered the band we were in. Of course I do. I/we were in several bands together with guys like Raymond Vaughn, Mike Diaz, Gino Diaz, Ricky Shreeves John Carter, Stan Williams and others. I can still remember trying to rehearse and learn new songs together in my mom's back yard patio. We were terrible, but at least we were LOUD. I am still surprised that our neighbors never called the cops on us. I recall playing in a couple of the school assemblies in the auditorium. We were also able to score a few gigs at PCC, Lambert Park and Mountain View Park thanks to June Randolph. Mind you, this was all happening during the peak of the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, followed by all of those great British Invasion bands like The Yardbirds, The Kinks, Herman's Hermits, and THE ROLLING STONES. The scary part was that we were originally a surf band- you Know- as in Dick Dale and the Deltones, The Surfaris, The Chan...Expand for more
tays and The Ventures. All we knew how to play were Instrumentals- Our favorite being, "Lets Take a Trip Down Whittier Blvd. " The truth was that none of us could sing, or we sucked at singing or were just too shy. It was really a shame too, because the other guys at EMHS, Ron Bauguss and his band actually began performing Bob Dylan songs and SINGING, " Like a Rolling Stone." It was friggin unbelievable. We DID have Stan " The Man" Williams as our singer but we only had one microphone in the whole group. Now, I have like 20 of them in a drawer somewhere. So, as I said, what we lacked in talent and musicianship, we more than made up for in sheer volume and pomposity. I recall one night we were playing on stage at the El Monte Civic Center with Jerry Alexander. Jerry was a tad older than the rest of us so I think he may have been doing a bit of drinking from his flask. Jerry launched into a searing rendition of GLORIA with improvisations that would have inspired Jim Morrison of THE DOORS. He damn near got us kicked off the stage by one of the adult chaperones. Oh, Those were the DAYS, my friends,..... I will now summarize with my usual invocation. To Wit,... Originally, I had signed up with Classmates with the notion that I might re-connect with one or more of the characters who I shared my formative years at New Lexington, Columbia and El monte High School. Names like Raymond Vaughn, Danny King, David Bleier, Julia Holbrook, Kathy Jo Keelin, Lynn Ann Devine, or Carla Warf . Oddly enough, my patience has paid off somewhat. While I am still waiting to hear from the above names, I have been fortunate to have made contact with many more of you. There are also a few others that have departed this world and it makes me very sad to realize that I will never get to see or speak to them again- at least Not in this dimension. Names like Ricky Shreeves, Robert Shreeves, Nicolett Murufas, and those others listed on the EMHS Memorial Pages. Losing my son two years ago has given me a different perspective on Life and living. Our time here is finite. We may have only spent four brief years together at EMHS and then moved on to college, jobs, careers, and Family. I did the same thing but I still harken back to those halcyon days and remember all the things I did and didn't do, but should have.
