I was always the shy science nerd, mostly loner, through school. Probably could have been absent for two weeks before anyone noticed! Socially & academically I was a late bloomer. I wiled away my time reading, building telescopes & model rockets, sitting at my shortwave radio, and dreaming. I found school boring and managed to start college during the last semester of high school. Instead of majoring in astrophysics, which had been my plan, I ended up double majoring in biology and psychology with a minor in chemistry. One of my greatest mentors at KU was Ralph Adams (Prof, Chemistry) in whose lab I spent 4 great years and was introduced to neuroscience before it was even a separate field of study. I met the love of my life, Andi, when she was 15 & I was 16! We got married the summer after our freshman year at KU and had our first daughter, Melissa, the fall after we graduated.
