Paula's Story

A few people have asked me to tell my story. Although I've danced around it, I guess it's time to share. However, I think I'll be like Scheherazade, the brilliant princess in the book One Hundred and One Arabian Nights, who beguiles her husband by telling him the beginning of a story each night, but never finishes it until the next night so that he can't kill her in the morning, as he did with his previous wives. Smart woman, our Scheherazade. <><><><><><><><> In 1964, I graduated from high school, with no vision of my future except for a cloudy idea that I wanted to be independent. <><><><><><><><><> Well, that was a long night; but I'm still here. Back to our story that is already in progress. I went to an airline school in Minneapolis in Sept. '64. It was that or the Air Force, the only choices my parents gave me. In Nov. '65, I got a job at Eastern Airlines in Manhattan, lived in a 5th floor walk-up studio apartment in the West Village, and got to know artists, writers, and musicians. Those were the days. People called me a hippy; I thought I was a bohemian. I wrote poetry and traveled on my airline passes. It was a good life, but I wanted something more for myself--and what I wanted wasn't tangible. Jump to 1969--went to Arizona in January, began classes at ASU in the Fall. Earned a BA in English. I had a career in the travel industry until 1988 when I became a T.A. in the ASU English dept. I had found that intangible thing I wanted--teaching. Earned an MFA in the creative writing program at ASU in 1991. I've written five scripts, but none have been produced. Hollywood is a tough town to navigate, and I did try. In 1993 I was accepted at Drew University in Madison, NJ, so I moved back East -- driving in snow was and is still scary. I earned my PhD in Modern History and Literature in 2002, focusing on the British Imperial presence in South Africa through the literature of H. Rider Haggard. I was an adjunct at three colleges to cobble together a living in teaching. I was finally offered a full time position at SUNY Sullivan in 2005 where I still teach in the Liberal Arts and Humanities Division. Last Fall I earned tenure and a promotion from Assistant to Associate Professor. Life has been a roller coaster, but what ...Expand for more
a great ride. I have no children--my only regret when I examine my life. I have two ex-spouses--no regrets for either marrying them or divorcing them--we make choices for various reasons and life just doesn't always work out the way we imagine it will. I learned life lessons from both of them; they helped me to become who I am today. I grew when they nurtured me, but I also grew because I pushed out the sides of the box where I felt they wanted me to live. Would I consider marriage again? I don't really know. I'm too busy teaching, writing, and doing community work to spend much time thinking about what might happen. I try to keep an open mind and heart, but I'm more cautious now than when I was 20 and 26. In ten years time, I hope to still be teaching, maybe part-time though, to have a book or more published, and to have accomplished more of my life's to-do list. Some people say I'm a late bloomer, and that's alright. I'm in good company. Another mile-stone in January 2016 -- traveled to Hong Kong and the Philippines and had a wonderful two weeks. It was my first trip to Asia, and I'm hoping there will be more. May 2016 update: At 71 I was pushed out to pasture. No more classroom teaching for me. But I'm not quite done yet. I am now a "professional tutor." Less pay, but less stress. June 2016--ticked off another trip on my bucket list. I took the train from NY to Montreal and then on to Quebec City. A wonderful trip. I love Old Town Quebec City. If I want skyscrapers I can go to NYC. Give me the "vieux carre" any day. January 2017. Trip to Japan. Another wonderful trip. Took lots of photos, ate great food, walked through bamboo forests, petted the sacred deer at Nara, visited shrines and temples, and went to a Kabuki theater. I wanted to see Mt Fuji closeup, but that will have to happen another time. I did get a great photo from a train. I accept for now, but next time, God willing, I plan that day trip a bit better. The next dream place is South Africa. Considering it was the subject of my dissertation research, I think I should get there someday soon. Other people's photos and narratives are just not enough. At some point during the 2017 summer, I'll be back in Jamestown and Chautauqua. Maybe I'll run into some of you.

Another snow day, no school, more nap time.
The winds are strong today. The branch weighed more than I’m used to hauling, but I could get it over onto to the strip of grass next to the driveway. ARRGH!!
From the overlook on the road between Ellenville to New Paltz. It’s a beautiful world up here.

Finally a photo that shows Gambits true beauty. The sun was setting and he was caught in its rays streaming through the window. Beautiful.
Spent five hours in ER with what was presenting as a heart attack and it turned out to be GERD. This is what I got for my patience. Still, I take GERD any night. Nexium will fix it up.
Winter Wonderland. This is not a black&white photo.
A Japanese toilet in a ladies' room stall at the Narita Airport, Tokyo Western type toilets are available, but they have features beyond belief, including heated seats. This photo is especially for Randal Piersons and Darl

Can someone tell me what kind of spider this is? It was on a picnic table in the Catskills, New York State.
An eerie dusk. Everything took on a pink tinge.
