Paula's Story
Left Baker the beginning of my Junior year. Moved to North Carolina where I presently live. Made some great friends during my high school years which I will never forget and still am looking for some today.
Most memorable moment is when my father came home for R&R from Vietnam during Christmas and my brother Paul, Class of 71', won the Christmas Basketball Tournament for BHS with his final free throw and my dad got to see it!
First kiss was from Arnie Angelo Class of 73'. First crush was with Eddie Hampton Class of 74'. We dated while I was at Baker but I lost touch shortly after I moved away. Also dated Chuck Holler but I heard he was transferred to Spencer at the beginning of his Junior year.
My old gang was Patricia (Tricia) Marvets, Faye Beasley, Nancy Kawalek, Frank "Benny" Balius, Terri Hancock, Carol Caulder, Marie Jones and Marti Meckes. I still have the photo from my going away party that Terri threw me! We have lost Benny and Eddie I am sad to say. I have found everyone of my old friends except for two Marti and Kevin "CRAZY KEV" Murdock. I have made endless attempts over the years to find my dear friends but to no avail.
I tried out for cheerleader but did not make the cut. Oh well... I remember the riots, the auditorium burning and dances at the Brat...Expand for more
Club on Post. During the school riots I was leaning down to my bottom locker when a group of what seemed like hundreds came running down the stairs and down the halls of BHS. I was knocked down and classmates began stepping and running over top of me. Chuck Holler, who at the time I did not know other than he was a football player, grabbed me by my shoulder and pulled me up. He pushed me into one of the classrooms and told me to stay there. He shut the door behind him and I ran over to the window only to see students fighting in the courtyard. It was so scary at the time and I often wondered what might of happened to me if is wasn't for Chuck.
I loved Miss McDuffie my English teacher. Every time I write something down I think of her and I do my best to make her proud of me and what she taught me. But I think my favorite teacher was Mrs. Lahnstein. She was my biology teacher. I loved dissecting frogs and I remember the time we had to prick our finger, put a drop of blood on a slid and look threw a microscope to determine what blood type we were. Funny how certain events in your life you can remember just like they were yesterday.
Terri Hancock gave me a going away party when I left Columbus/Fort Benning with some of my closest friends attending. Check out the photo.
