Paula's Story

Life and School ....to the students at MontgomeryHighSchool where I attended for 1 year in my 9th grade year, I thank you all these years later for making the new kid on the block feel welcome.... I have great memories of that 1 year I attended MHS starting in the fall of 1963 & then leaving & moving back to Houston where I had moved From, the following summer of 1964...we moved there after buying property down RabonChapelRd from my cousins, Gary & PamAudas in 1962. My Dad built what was intended to be a wknd place, but as the CubanMissileCrisis heated up through those years, it became more evident that we needed to get out of Dodge Houston...I got a horse during that year&even rode it to school one day what was my mother thinking , finally learned sentence diagramming in MrsMarySue's class, cook in MrsSteger's & algebra in MrsPhillips'...the camaraderie of the small group dynamics was just what I needed at that time in my life. Had to move back to Houston end of that 9th grade year & leave all my girlfriends and boyfriends Floyd & RobertO and finished in January 1966 at my old school SamHoustonHS, on the northside near the airport. 40 plus years later thanks so much for your kindness and memory-making! I left SamHoustonHS in January of 1966 and immediately started classes at TexasWomen'sU in Denton, with a predecided major in my passion art/advertising. January of 1969, I moved back to Houston & started working for the Chronicle with my byline and picture, TheTalkOfTheTown with PaulaNorris.....a little Sunday advertising Shopper'sColumn made up of lots of little lady place ads that came out every Sunday in the Women'sSection. I am now permanently immortalized in the DowntownHoustonPublicLibrary on 3 years worth of microfilm. I sold and wrote that column fell in love, married & left in March of 1972 to give birth to my 1st son, Shelby. Anson, my 2nd manchild, came in 1976. I did the MomThingy for the next 20 years or so & always had some little TableTopEnterprise job of sorts going on the side...cake decorating, sewing for the public, complete makeup, sales & layout of the yearbook for my son's private school in exchange for tuition, church secretary & my most long-lasting enterprise, a merchandising job in grocery stores for HallmarkCards. ...as in HS, I still work in lots of art techniques with EverythingCreative & have probably dabbled with all the major mediums, including 2 of my most recent, making and selling jewelry & quilts. My style in jewelry leans toward Edwardian & colored glass crystals, and my quilts contain a lot of abstract stylization of traditional blocks. I meet most Monday nites w/a group of ladies & we make and hash over our quilts & ultimately give them away to various church members & nursing homes. For the last almost-20 yrs I've traveled international with my husband and his oilfield job as a teacher training instructor for BakerHughes England & my favorite, AberdeenScotland....Canada,France,Belgium, Holland, Norway & November2004, CelleGermany. Just got back from Aberdeen about a month ago in July, 2005...coming much too close this time to the Thursday bombings in London. We were down in Birmingham traveling thru PrincessDiana's estate near the bomb factory & perpetrator were arrested just the weekend before that Thursday, and then in the air on the way home via Amsterdam Friday afterwards... While John works and teaches his drilling mud classes all day, I'm on my own & out & about to the sites. I've become so comfortable going to Scotland over the years, that I now drive up & down the coast stopping in at castles & my passion, charit...Expand for more
y shops & jumble sales. We almost always include little side trips before heading home. Boy's are grown now~Shelby 39 works for the railroad , does computer & soundsystem installing and Anson 35 is a Doc in biochemistry research. Since the summer of 2007 I've gotten back into my dollcollecting...all the bigtime HardPlastic and Vinyl fashion dolls preBarbie...the girls I never had College... I started classes at TexasWomen'sU in Denton in January, 1966, just a few days after HS graduation on January 20, 1966. I went there not knowing anyone, and had already decided to major in art and advertising. I lived in the dorm, owned a bike, and had parttime jobs &and took classes. Summers I would go back home and work at SearsOnShepherd to pay for extras & spending money for the school year. I left 3 yrs later, transferring to UTAustin, but ultimately dropping out before the semester was over in January 1969 and came back to Houston where after working for several advertising agencies I landed my 1st corporate job, TheTalkOfTheTown by PaulaNorris, a retail shoppers' column that appeared every Sunday in the HoustonChronicle Workplace... Hm-m-m...work. DuringHS summers & wknds & thru the college years, holidays & summers, I worked at the old SearsOnNShepherd, floaters they called us, moving around from dept to dept~actually where I met my husband, John, 39 years ago, 1969. TheHoustonChronicle was the 1st big job out of college. I was there 3 years and during that time I moved into my own garage apt and supported myself and my car, fell in love, and married in 1971. I worked there another yr or so, 'till I had my 1st son. I was in retail outside sales, called on small accounts, sat w/clients and did advertising layouts, wrote copy and in general rode herd on my little shopper's column, TheTalkOfTheTown with PaulaNorris, that appeared every Sunday in the women's section. TheMommyYears from 1972 - 'till both kids married & got out on their own I had several TableTop jobs, cake decorating, sewing for the public, designing & selling jewelry and quilts, pastry cook in an elementary school, church secretary, yearbook creator, advisor & sales for my kid's private school in exchange for tuition. About 1985 I started working pttime for HallmarkCards going in and out of grocery stores..after almost 20 yrs I left Hallmark in early 2007. Shelby is 36 now and Anson is 32, both single and not a grand at all on the horizon.. Today, in 2011 I still go about all of my creative arty pursuits and have recently gotten back into my doll collecting....having survived my sisters abuse and plain old dust, 2 of my childhood dolls now have about 30 similar brothers and sisters...the surviving girls are a MadAlexander 1957 Cissette and a 1958 MissRevlon, and like all ardent collectors I love dressing them, their hair their millions of accessories and the thrill of the hunt that goes into all of the collecting. I still travel all over with my husband and his drilling mud teaching job in the oilfield...I am mulling over going with him to Dubai in late July ....am so thrilled you found me and invite you to make contact and touch base! for those of you who knew me from SamHouston HighSchool.......there are plans for a 50th reunion, I have been the ReunionOrganizer for the last almost-30 years....contact me if you're interested in being a part of our database group ..reach me paulap fortyseven at hot mail dot com I always wanted to be a artist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a pipedream & against the choices of the times idea. As it turns out, they were wrong, it was a Passion!.
