Paula's Story

Life Hi, gang! I am currently teaching Honors Biology and AP Biology at Orange Park High School in Orange Park, FL. Did you see that one coming?! I am also the Science Fair Coordinator at our school, which qualifies me as a full fledged science geek, to be sure! I have 2 wonderful daughters - one is a UConn husky graduate with an analytical chemistry degree (another science geek!) and the other daughter is a University of North Florida graduate, with a fine arts/sculpture degree! I have 2 Labrador retrievers who keep me sane, and I get to revisit high school on a daily basis, being a high school teacher! The dramas have not changed much from 1974 to 2010, trust me! For kicks, I sing in a women's acapella quartet called Dream Girls and have competed at our International Competition (like our Olympics) with my quartet twice now. I also sing in an international caliber women's acapella chorus, the Jacksonville Harmony Show Chorus. We competed in Calgary, Canada at our Chorus International Competition in 2007. I had the chance last summer to travel to St Petersburg, Russia as faculty for a music festival with my quartet and fellow male and female chorus and quartet singers to bring our artform to Russian Conservatory teachers and their students! That was fantastic! We performed in some of the most beautiful concert halls in Europe to packed houses! What an experience! I still love the beach, being a California girl and all. That sand and surf gets in your blood - I just have traded oceans from the Pacific to the Atlantic! I get all excited when I see Los Alamitos cheerleaders on ESPN at Cheerleading Competitions - yup, I've still got that griffin spirit! Go Los Al! School My two most favorite teachers w...Expand for more
ithout a doubt would have to be Mrs. Zabel (yes, I am a graduate from the House of Zabel) and Mr. Hauenstein (who can ever forget his lecture on the ancient Indian curse of our Presidents). Also have a soft spot for Mrs. Reid in Clothing and Home Arts - she was great! A favorite memory I have involved both Mr. H and Mrs. Reid - he allowed us to knit and crochet in his AP US History class, as long as he got a nose warmer for Christmas (spoken with a twinkle in his eye)...so naturally, I crochetted him a nose warmer, complete with tassle on the end and presented it to him in class! The look on his face was priceless - almost as good as the look on his face as he modelled his new nosegear! He was a truly memorable teacher. And I am convinced that Clarence got his take on the Clarence Report of the soap opera summaries straight from Mrs. Zabel because, honey, she had been summarizing the Illiad in hilarious fashion, complete with voiceovers of all the characters, for us all along through World Lit and AP English! She was priceless! Then there was the streaking of Randy Flook and Craig Foster across campus to arrive at the getaway car - only to realize too late that they did not have the keys (inconveniently left in their pants pocket back at the point of origin for the big dash!). And there was the time during the cheerleaders tug of war against the football team when Maureen Sweeney and I tied the end of our rope to the chorus door handle so that we cheerleaders could be victorious - only to have the guys pull so hard that the handle went flying clear off the door! Ah, yes - and there was Mike Berger's memorable Elvis impersonation which will always remain ever endeared to my heart. Such fond memories of Los Al!
