Paula Alwin:

CLASS OF 1963
Independence, MO

Paula's Story

Okay, this is the 3rd time that I've written my profile ..... lost the first two (long) profiles when almost finished so this will be short. My 2nd husband, Larry and I moved back to the KC Metro area last July, 2014 and spent some time in a corporate apartment before our Villa in far west Olathe was completed in October, 2014. We have adjusted well although we have had some challenges with health issues but things seem to be on the mend. Larry's situation was serious, with a rare, fast growing Salivary Gland malignant tumor; but he had a wonderful ENT doctor at KU Med who has and is taking wonderful care of him. We are so thankful! I have lived in Texas for many, many years and trips back to Independence were every few years and very fast in and out visits around Christmas time. I was a big time workaholic so I couldn't be gone for long! Ha! Sadly, it's true. I have not kept in touch with classmates or even friends and church friends that I buddied around with for years and I have not attended any class reunions. Larry and I worked for the same oil company, in the KC Metro area, and at different times (Larry first) we transferred to Houston, TX. Larry retired in 1985 by taking a "Golden Parachute" and immediately applied for the Texas State Auditor position which was open and he was selected and commissioned to that position by Governor Mark White in 1985. Larry stayed in that position for another 20 years and retired in 2005. I stayed in Houston for awhile after Larry moved to Austin (State Capitol) and when we married in 1988, I moved to the Austin area where we remained, until 2006 when we moved to a small town west of Waco, named Gatesville. We became involved in Prison Ministry in 1996 and had been commuting back and forth for 10 years, to and ...Expand for more
from Gatesville; a 5 1/2 hour round trip drive. Gatesville population sign showed 15,000 people and 7,500 of those people were incarcerated in the various 10 prisons in that town. We lived in Gatesville and were full time Chaplaincy volunteers, until we moved back here to Olathe. Full time was 6 or 7 days a week and 10 - 12 hour days. For a good portion of that time, we served together at a women's maximum security unit, with the reputation of being the worst female unit in the state, and it was .... tough, tough women. We have been on the most amazing journey seeing our big God do big things...many of them miracles! We returned to this area because God began to direct us to return so that we could be close to our youngest grandchildren, 10, 12, and 17. Our 5 granddaughters in Texas are now grown and we had years with them for summer visits and time to develop long established relationships. Although we left many, many good friends and ministry friends in Texas, we have learned to be obedient and knew that we were to return to this area. Since we've returned, we have bonded well with these three (3) grandchildren and believe that we are doing a great job of spoiling them and sending them home to their parents. These are my son's children, and they are my miracle grandchildren ..... it's a long story and, of course, it is one of God's miracles manifested in our lives. Larry and I have been on the most amazing journey these last 20 years and feel that we are currently on sabbatical, as God gets us in better physical condition, to once again send us forth. I keep thinking about Leavenworth prison being so close ..... but we'll wait and see what God's plans for us are; learned a long time ago to be still and let God! Would be glad to hear from people.
