Peggy's Story

I just recently retired from the V.A. Hospital in Portland after 32 years. I was the lead dental assistant and loved my job. It was tough saying goodbye to my co-workers and the patients but my husband, Norton, needed my help. He had been having vision problems and could no longer drive. Besides, I had been taking care of vets for all those years, it was time to take care of my favorite vet. Unfortunately, Nort died on July 8th at Portland International Raceway from a head injury. He had gone out to help some friends at the Historic Races. The track is our second home and the racing community is our second family. Norton and I met at O.T.I. and became friends after moving to Portland. He introduced me to racing in 1971 and I loved it (if you remember from highschool, I had that little Corvair). He raced a Super Vee and Formula Ford, I was his crew. We made many friends which I still keep in contact . In 1976, we were married and spent our honeymoon driving across country to Atlanta, to the Sports Car Club of America National Runnoffs (the best amateur racers in the U.S.). My father-in-law wanted to buy ...Expand for more
us furniture, instead, we opted for a C.B. radio. It was "breaker/breaker, come on back now" by the time we got to Pendleton. We crewed for a dentist from California, Ed took a 3rd in his Lola B-sports racer that year and in '77, he took a first. Alot of pro racers come out of S.C.C.A. Nort quit his day job and started his own race shop in our garage. He was known for his knowledge in car set-ups and suspension. There was such a good response, he eventually moved into a shop out by the airport. He traveled all over the country and many times I would go with him. I volunteered at the track in Timing and Scoring and now I help in Registration. I am on the local board for Sports Car Club of America (I think only because of all the people I know...). I will continue being involved with racing, for there's nothing like the start of an Indy Car or Nascar Race that makes you proud you live in a country that allows you to do the thing you love. If you are ever out at P.I.R., stop by Registration and say "Hi". Norton and I would want you to live every moment of your life, for you're only on this planet once. Peggy
