Peggy's Story

Peggy attended DuVal High School and graduated in 1967 She received her Bachelor of Science from UMD College Park and began teaching in Cheverly at Happy Acres Elem She met Don Lyons during her senior year at college and married him after one year of teaching . Don graduated from DuVal in1964 and from UMD 68 His career with GEICO and his many promotions led us to wonderful new friends and experiences throughout the USA We started our first move after I finished my third year teaching in Cheverly and headed to Sea Girt NJ where I became pregnant with my first and only daughter, Christie ! I could not have asked for a nicer, brighter, or more special child! We were promoted to Chicago before she was born and lived there for 3 years and then promoted to Honolulu HI ! What a beautiful place and experience we had! I ended up teaching preschool without interviewing as one preschool teacher left Where my daughter was to attend due to husband's transfer. It was the best yes I ever said! The other three teachers and aide helped me to understand the culture, the true aloha spirit, and how to teach Hawaiian art on a shoestring budget! Loved it! Three years later another promotion and a sad Aloha to Hawaii we return home to MD and reside in Potomac, MD I teach at Potomac Elementary under another DuValian who recognized my name so interviewed me! Seven years later Don is promoted to regional director of west coast and we are off to San Diego,CA My daughter and I had to get used to the difference in lifestyle ! We kept feeling like we were on vacation with the small pool in our backyard and palm trees! Chris finished High School and I did volunteer teaching. Many new friends again! Collecting as we go! Don and I thought we would retire in SD but one more promotion led us back to MD and Don became a Senior VP for the company ! We had many wonderful years with GEICO and Don retired last May . They tried to talk him out of it again but we needed more time with the two grandsons and to travel the world! We live a busy life residing in Tampa ,FL but traveling to SF to see grandsons or a trip to Europe or visits to MD or San Diego ! We are enjoying the time to explore our personal interests and ...Expand for more
maybe we will actually be able to attend some reunions now! Well after 3 years in Tampa, we decided to return to MD where GEICO called Don and asked if he would come back to work for a few years as they had grown so much they needed him to help out ! He was retired for three years but went back when they gave him California Region where our grandchildren live and Alaska and Hawaii! We see our grandsons regularly now and they have bought their house and we are happy! We live by the Bay where I love to walk and see the sea life all around! We love trips to the deserts and mountains as well when weather is right! The wildflower bloom was the best in 60 years arriving after an 11 year drought. We were here for last year of drought and then the rain that greened us up and brought us beautiful wild flowers and flower fields! Our grandsons love to spend the night when their busy schedule permits and love the beach as well! Our older grandson , Grant, loves science in all forms and dreams of becoming an astronaut someday! He really is dedicated to all living things ! Recently he started learning to play lacrosse. Besides science he is an exceptional reader and reads well beyond his years and we hope he will contribute to life in a meaningful way one day with all his knowledge! Our younger grandson is an excellent student as well and loves humorous books and math too! He is a sport lover like granddad Lyons and his favorite is soccer. He was invited to try out for all stars and made the team so new adventure this year for him! Connor also loves flag football and is youngest on team but hangs in there! He also likes to hit balls with Grant and Grandparents at bay for family play but says game is too boring to do full time but both boys are decent hitters and runners in our sand games! They like going to Padres games and keeping scorecard with Grandad sometimes too! I miss Maryland sometimes, but manage to get back to see family and friends when time permits! A friend sent me a sweatshirt that said you can take the girl out of Maryland but you can't take MD out of the girl and it was perfect for me. Looking forward to making the reunion and thanks to those who are putting the time in to organize it!
