Peggy's Story

Life I attended Sam Houston State University from 1974-1978 and received a B.S.in social rehabilitation. Moved to Houston expecting to get some experience and move on. Met my husband in 1981 and never left the general area until August of 2007. I always worked until June of 2000 when I took family leave to take care of my husband. He had a brain tumor which took him from us in January of 2001. I was a stay at home mom until 2013 (more about that later). I have three great kids ranging in age from 21-32. My oldest,Erin, is married and currently living in El Paso, TX as her husband Jason is stationed at Fort Bliss. She and Jason have given me thee precious grandchildren: Coleman, age 8, Aria age 6 and Kace age 1. Since they just relocated there, Erin is not currently employed but is actively looking for a position on post. Elise, my nearly 30 year old daughter, is also married. She and Aaron have two adorable kids Justin age 4 and Audrey age 2. She is now a stay at home mom. They built a four bedroom house on 7 acres in Porter TX right before Justin was born. Aaron works for a company that cleans, dries and tests pipeline. They have recently purchased an RV Park near their home and that keeps them very busy as well. Shane is age nearly 21 and shares the same birthday with Elise, 9 years apart. He is currently attending Blinn College in Bryan TX and hopes to segue into Texas A&M once he gets his grades up. He gave a shot at playing college baseball in Oklahoma but found it too difficult to juggle the demands of school and baseball. Bruce Lackey, class of '73, and I were in a long distance relationship for four years prior to both relocating to New Braunfels in 2007. With ten kids between us, nothing is ever boring! He has 14 grandchildren to my 5. We downsized to a 3 bedroom single story house in 2015. Bruce and I have both had it with stairs! Kevin moved out recently and has an apartment with a friend he has known since middle school.. Bruce makes yearly sabbatticals to the Big Bend area on his motorcylce. I have yet to join him, but one of these days.... Workplace After graduating from Sam Houston State with a B.S. in social rehabilitation, I did my internship with Harris County Juvenile Probation. Would have liked to continue in that venue but Reagan was in office and was slashing a lot of social spending. People with masters deg...Expand for more
rees were going for the entry level jobs so I had to branch out in other directions. I worked as a district manager for the now defunct Houston Post newspaper for a year. Decided that lifestyle was not for me and registered at some temporary agencies. I was hired by Texas Instruments and worked my way up to a product marketing engineering position...actually marketing but all professional positions there had the title engineer attached! Got laid off there after five years but never looked back. My next position was that of inside sales manager for Moore Paper Company. Soon after I began working there I found out we were expecting our first child. I was laid off from there and probably could have sued their pants off. However, it was more important to me to have a healthy child. Six months later, they filed bankruptcy anyway. While pregnant, I worked various temp positions and was hired permanently by Varian Instruments. They manufacture high end laboratory equipment. This was probably my most favorite job. I was a sales support specialist and worked there for five years until my husband was transferred across town and we moved to Atascocita. A month later I was hired by GTE Wireless and stayed there for ten years. I worked in customer service, inside sales, major accounts and ended up at the retail store in Kingwood as a sales rep and then ran the service department. I worked there until July 2000. My husband became ill and I had to quit to take care of him. He passed away in 2001 so my job now was full-time Mom to our three kids...the biggest responsibility of all! I did go back to work in 2013 at a call center and just "retired" on 9/8/2017, on what would have been my mothers 91st birthday. I was on my way to work that day in a funk and decided I had had enough. I gave my two week notice and have never looked back. My goals and their goals did not mesh. I do not miss it at all. I now stay busy with various projects around the house and our new to us Rottweiller, Raleigh. Our previous Rottweiller, Bear, passed away in January 2018 at age 11. Raleigh will be three in November. A family in San Antonio was moving in with parents and could not take the dog with them. Once we get my Mom's house sold and everything settled, I am thinking about baking cookies for resale. I have always been told mine are the very best! Not sure where to begin with that.
