Penelope's Story

Gosh, where do you start to catch up after 50 years? I guess the place to start is after high school. I went to Sonoma State University, then known as Granola U. I settled on Environmental Studies with an Education emphasis, but not without some detours along the way. One of these included working in Paris as an au-pere and traveling for a summer in 1976. And, In 1985, I worked for a Spring with the Young Adult Conservation Corps out at Pt. Reyes National Seashore as the only woman on the carpentry crew. We were charged with upgrading the park superintendent's office and I was hanging sheetrock with the best of them. This led me to qualify to work for a summer for the same program in Southeast Alaska. We worked on conservation projects in conjunction with the Forest Service there and had many adventures. How could you not with grizzly bears and bald eagles for neighbors? I finished my B.A. at S.S.U. and worked briefly for the Nature Conservancy as an Environmental Educator at their North Coast Range Preserve working with local elementary kids in the area. I worked for a year and a half as a weaver in Marin County. Yes! Loved this job, the people, the independence, and the creativity involved. I made decent enough money at the time for such a thing, too. I am still in close touch with several of the weaving clan of those days. Living the life of an environmental educator was so demanding and limiting that I decided to go back to SSU and got my Multipl...Expand for more
e Subject teaching credential. I ended up studying Spanish at night and ultimately traveled to and lived in Cuernavaca, Mexico for four months to boost my language skills. This ultimately served me in getting my Bilingual Certificate of Competency and I taught in elementary schools-primary grades mostly- in Spanish during the day. I heard back from parents of kids that I had taught that their kids (Anglo and Latino) were so much better prepared in school from doing this than others in a traditional English-only classroom. It was a great run for a while. Burnout and politics led me to choose a different course. I did contract work for Child Protective Services as a Parent Educator and offered family resources guidance. I finally ended up working in the San Rafael Canal District and created a preschool program educating parents and their children 0-5 yrs. old to help them be better prepared for entering kindergarten .school. Very fulfilling and demanding but am happy to be retired now. My husband and I live in the beautiful countryside of Sonoma County. I have a step-daughter and grandchildren and we fuss over our dog and cat. I spend my time writing a historical fiction novel, gardening, doing crafts, enjoying live music, and local art. We also have a wealth of amazing friends here, so life is really good. For quite some time, I have gone by my given and married name: (Penelope Butterfield Young), but will always answer to Penny with old friends and family.
