Penny's Story

Life Hello. I"m still alive and growing. I am a clinical social worker (LCSW). As a child of the 60's, I tuned in, dropped out, challenged authority, lost my shoes at Woodstock, lost my big brother in Viet Nam, married Fred Thoma, played my guitar, refused to conform, tried my best to change the world, had two beautiful children, loved them dearly, lost one to SIDS, lost Fred to his grief and addictions, found Penny and worked my way through the education system as a single mom with a beautiful little girl---by cleaning houses/ serving cocktails, and giving birth to a thesis-- we made it and I became an agent for social change. At the end of a long and winding road, I became the person I always wanted to be!! (And I learned first hand that it's better by far to BE the person you always wanted than to FIND the person you always wanted! I waited to remarry and have more children until I was sure I could earn enough money to support myself and my wonderful daughter on my own, because Fred vanished when she was 4 years old....as in ZERO child support, etc...I did remarry a kind and decent man and juggled 2 more of my own biological babies, two wonderful foster children with special needs, and helped raise two other beautiful children of a man I lived with between marriages. I am happy to say that all of them survived along with me. LOL. So many opportuniies to grow and to learn... Fred Thoma died in 1984. I believe the cause of death was "Too much sex, and drugs, and rock and roll." Like many of our generation, I assumed that those chapters of my life were closed, but I was never really out of the woods. Twenty years slid past, and in 2004 I became mysteriously fatigued and seemed to be more irritable, experienced constant small illnesses and seemed suddenly accident prone. I broke my shoulder in five places, t...Expand for more
hen fell again just when I healed only to break my arm. No matter how much sleep I had I could barely stay awake. My sense of time blurred. I knew something was wrong, but I appeared to be healthy. One morning I woke up and walked into s wall. I appeared to be drunk, but I had no drugs or alcohol in me. I was rushed to the ER, I had malnutrition and anemia... After a week of iron infusions, high protein meals, every test you could imagine, I came home, resumed my normal routines, and one week later I was comatose... Back in the hospital, further tests revealed HepC, a mystery to me because I hadn't been an IV drug user, and I hadn't worked in the medical or dental field, but I did receive plasma in 1976 after a surgery. My youngest child was 11 and he also tested positive.. 2004 and 2005 were a maze of hospitalizations, biopsies, interferon injections, chemo therapy, trips to Children's Memorial Hospital, trips to University Hospital, trips to Rush, toxic ammonia levels for me. Remission for my son. (YEA!!!!) Failed treatment and liver failure for me... Not a pleasant death I was experiencing... FINALLY a miracle for me. Late in 2005, I was blessed to receive a donor liver from Living Hope. Thanks to the generosity and compassion of a special young man. My donor, Timmy, was 22 years old, he loved to sing and he loved baseball and he wanted to help people and he had a beautiful heart and soul, and he had just become an RN and started his first week of full time nursing at a hospital in Chicago. He was killed by a drunk driver. I'm writing this because of Timmy. Please register yourself and encourage your friends and family to check that little box to become organ donors. It only takes 30 seconds and the life you save might be someone just like you or the people you love. Thanks for reading this. Penny
