Pete's Story
Life
After graduating from North Central, I attended Purdue University and received my DVM. I practiced on the south side of Indianapolis for 2 years, then bought a practice in Cicero, Indiana. I completed an MS in biology at IUPUI while in practice, then sold my practice and returned to Purdue, West Lafayette to do a PhD in veterinary pharmacology and education (joint PhD). I was offered a position in the veterinary school after completion of my graduate work and have since been involved in curriculum reform, different approaches to education of the veterinary professional, and, most recently, have become the director of the 2 and 4 year Veterinary Technology Programs ("veterinary nursing")in the School of Veterinary Medicine. Life is fun, challenging, and working with students keeps one young. Am sure life will run out way before everything is crossed off my fun-to-do list :)
Update: July 2013: Have been appointed Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs for the College of Veterinary Medicine. Principle duties are to improve the teaching quality of the faculty and staff, and to assess the quality of education the students are receiving.
Update June 30,2017 - I retired from Purdue. Pursuing interests in Purdue history and president of the Board of the Tippecanoe County Historical Association. And other duties as assigned.....

ack and serve as interim Director of the Veterinary Nursing Program. 10 days after I resumed those duties, COVID shut down the university. That wasn't mentioned in my contract when I agreed to do this. But, it worked out okay because I had 30 years of knowing how the university runs and with more than half of the staff still comprised of people I had hired, we handled the tidal wave of challenges and successfully weathered all the upheaval to our in-person education caused by COVID isolation (including required clinical experiences). By fall 2020 we found a great permanent Director to take over, so on September 30th I RE-retired. All I can say is that Retirement version 2.0 is going to stick... I learned my lesson. My second career in researching and writing about local history (Tippecanoe County and Purdue) has been flourishing and in April 2021 my first history book was published by Arcadia Press/The History Press on "The 1913 Flood and Tippecanoe County". Projects in the works: a book on the first 50 years of the Purdue Veterinary Technician/Nursing program (due 2025), a partnership book on the bicentennial celebration of Tippecanoe County and Lafayette (2025-2026), a compilation and digitization of historical documents about the Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine (2022), and possibly a collaborative book about the history of the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Purdue (details to be determined). It's good to stay busy.
