Peter's Story
Life
Worked for Navy for 38 years. Retired in 2003. Lived in Maryland from 1965 until 2003 when my wife, Brenda, and I moved to Virginia.
We travel. Recently we were in China, Japan and South Korea. Last year, 2006, we went to Germany to visit friends and to see a World Cup game. I am writing a novel.
College
After getting out of the US Navy in 1969, I attended Univ of Maryland where I got a B.A. in Comparative Literature in 1970. I got a Gilman Fellowship to attend Johns Hopkins Univ to get a PhD. I finished course work and opted to take a leave of absence and an M.A. in Humanities with all but dissertation completed. Never went back. Got an M.A. in National Security Studies from Georgetown in 1992. We lived in Hawaii from 1996 until 2000 where I attended UH as a PhD candidate in International Political Theory. Again managed to get up to the dissertation and we moved back to Maryland. During the next couple of years worked with my advisor by long-distance and then I had open heart surgery in 2002 and decided there were other more important things to do.
Workplace

including 8 years of active duty. Had reasonable success. Was the foreign liaison officer for a Navy program. Eventually became the Director of the program. Was the advisor to the Chief of Naval Research in 1993-94 (and again in 2000-2002). Volunteered to go to Hawaii as an advisor to the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet from 1996 to 2000. I was selected to be the Chair of a program at the Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey in 2003. Politics got in the way. I had had enough of politics and the bureaucracy so I retired in 2003.
Military
Joined Navy in Feb 1959 when I realized I was having too much fun at Santa Rosa JC and I probably wouldn't become an actor after all. Went to Russian language school. Stationed in Japan for two years. Got out of the Navy in 1963 and got a divorce. Worked various jobs, tried to go back to school. Nothing worked. Re-joined the Navy in 1965. Went to French language school. Stationed at Fort Meade in Maryland for three years. Got out of the Navy in 1969. Went to school finally with some success. Went to work for the Navy in 1973 as a civilian. Stayed with it until 2003.
