Peter's Story
Hello, I'm living in La Jolla these days, retired from the University of California San Diego, where I was the director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library and curator of the Scripps historical archives. My high school interest in marine biology (who taught that summer school class in marine biology?) came back around in my career. In college, I aimed to be a laboratory microbiologist, and graduated from Cal State Long Beach after starting out at UCI. Then I pursued a masters degree in library and information science at USC for a professional librarian career direction. I progressed, though I never thought I would end up as a library director given my start shelving books in the downtown Huntington Beach Public Library starting midway through senior year. Working at Scripps Institution of Oceanography provided an avenue to pursue my personal ...Expand for more
interests in the ocean. I went scuba diving locally with Scripps scientists assisting them with their research, was a volunteer diver for 11.5 years in the Scripps Aquarium (feeding fish and waving hello at children through the glass), went on an oceanographic research ship cruise, went on submersible dives down to 1,000 feet in the SoCal underwater canyons. I continue to scuba dive, though less numerous these days, and have logged over 1,400 dives over the years, which is a lot of time underwater! I enjoy cycling on road bikes and have a collection of vintage racing bicycles which I enjoy riding and wrenching. I am interested in San Diego history and research/write on the Palomar Mountain area. I also spend time maintaining an underwater guide to Antarctica on the web, which grew out of my participation in two photography/film expeditions there. ... Peter
