Peter's Story

OK here we go. Straight out of High School (September 1978), I went into the US Army for a 3 year enlistment where I was able to see the World at the tax payers expense, Thank You. September 1981 returned to San Jose. For a year I played around bartending then I went to work at UPS as a driver. 1983 I was lucky to meet Maureen (Mo) who would later become my wife. We were married Aug 23, 1986. I stayed with UPS till 1988 at which time I changed occupations and started a new carrier in the Electronics Industry. For the next few years I work for a Silicon Valley start-up running the Sales and Marketing department. We supplied High end ridged and flexible circuit boards for all the major electronic companies and even a couple of the National Labs (Lawrence Livermore and Sandia National Labs). I was able to build a reputation in the industry and with that I was able to land a job with a major Japanese high end technology leader (IBIDEN) who was trying to capture market share by developing a Sales & Marketing team in the US. With them I was again able to travel the world on someone elses dime. In 1997 on a chance meeting I met my next employer at a conference in Hong Kong. They wanted to expand from China and into the U.S. and they felt I was one of 2 people that could help them do that so within a few week instead of traveling to Japan and other parts of the world I was now going to Hong Kong, Mainland China and other parts of the world every month or so. During the time I was with both of these employers I was able to find enough time to become the father of 2 wonderful kids my oldest Peter Jr. born March 1991 and my daughter Janelle born June 1995. Well after my contract ran it course with the Chinese I went to work for a small American company in Brisbane, CA. Again running the Sales & Marketing department. Where I stayed till December 2001. I found myself tired of the travel and I really wanted to see my kids grow up. After lengthy discussions with my wife I decided to once again change occupations, only thing was I didn't know what I wanted to do. So after 5 months of semi-retirement I did a 180 degree turn and moved from being behind the desk, traveling and barking orders to taking orders. I went down to the Carpenters Union and became indentured as...Expand for more
an apprentice. At the age of 42 I thought I was the oldest apprentice in history (after taking classes I realized I was nowhere near the oldest but I was close). The apprenticeship last 4 years and then you become a Journeyman carpenter providing you have the required number of work hours and all classes completed. I was one of the lucky ones I had both completed in 3.5 years and in 2005 I became a Journeyman Carpenter. All the time staying gainfully employed and actually seeing the fruits of one’s labor that in most cases will last well after I leave this earth. Well after wearing my tool bags for 7 years I have chosen to leave the field work behind and I took a position with the Northern California Carpenters Regional Council (NCCRC much easier to say), as a field rep. With this new position I am one of 180 men and woman who represent over 40,000 Northern California Carpenters. My first position was working in the organizing department where most of my day is spent working for all workers and attempting to protect the workers, their families and their right to fair pay and benefits they deserve. Presently I'm assigned to Carpenters Local 22 covering all of the City & County of San Francisco as the Marketing & Political Representative. It's a big job and I hope over the next 7 to 10 years and as I end my career I will to be able to look back on my life and say that I made a difference. Well if you have read this far I hope you will stay for a little longer as I wrap this up. I wouldn't have been able to do what I have done in my adult life without the support of a great woman and wife. My wife Maureen has been my rock not only has she given me 2 beautiful kid she has continued to stay gainfully employed as a Longshoreman for the last 34 years. She was one of the first 2 woman on the waterfront on all 3 coasts (West, East and Gulf Coast). My son graduated high school in June 2009 and is working in the Bay Area. My daughter graduated June 2013. We have been living in Hayward, CA for the last 23 years. When we bought we said we were only staying for 5 years well you know how that works. If you get a chance send me an e-mail and we can discuss old times. Sorry if I have gone on too long but it the salesman in me!!!!!! Regards, Peter Garza Sr.
