Peter's Story

After HS I attended several universities and collected a bunch of degrees and certificates. I also played cello in a couple of orchestras but stopped that part of my life when I decided to concentrate on being a Sociologist. My career in Sociology lasted exactly 18 months, when I became an Assistant Dean in the St. Louis Community College District. My entire professional life after that, until I retired in 2003, was devoted to working with community colleges where I served in every capacity from member of the faculty through chief executive officer, and as a member and officer of various regional and national organizations, and accreditation bodies. My personal life has been rather hectic, partly due to the demands of my professional life. I've been married 4-times (yikes!), but in my case, the 4th time is the charm. This is my wife's 4th marriage as well (fate?). We fit very well (both a little goofy) and we truly enjoy each other. I have two children with my first wife. My daughter died as a baby. My son Steven is 45 and currently lives in Kenosha, WI. I have lived across the United States since we graduated - Missouri, California, Oregon, Arizona, and now Florida. I have visited every state except some of those in New England. Part of our plan for moving to Florida was to position ourselves for driving trips along the East Coast to New England and Quebec. But my wife went back to work and that...Expand for more
has made it impractical to drive long distances in the times we have available. I enjoy being retired. Amazingly, there never seems to be enough time to do what I want. I suppose it's because I no longer have to abide by the dictates of a calendar or watch, and the only real due-date I have comes once-a-year on April 15. I continue to enjoy my life-long involvement with audio/video equipment, and media reproduction in the home. My latest changes focus on ultra high definition sources and audio amplification. I have about 300 films in the HD and Blu-Ray formats and, honestly, played on a high definition screen supported by a good audio system, it's better than going to any movie theater except an IMAX. I remember our high school experiences with great fondness. We were very fortunate to attend one of the truly great high schools at the peak of its comprehensiveness. We had it all at Austin - from Performing Arts to Job Training, Liberal Arts to ROTC, Championship Athletics, and everything in between. When I describe our high school to others they always look at me in astonishment. During 43 years in higher education I never came across another public high school that was so much like a university, so comprehensive in its offerings, and so uniformly excellent in the education provided. We were very fortunate, and received a huge leg-up for the rest of our lives. Regards to all, Peter Hirsch
