Peter Martin 's Story

Jumped eagerly into the world after graduation with a false start at Santa Ana College. Kennedy's death at the end of that year troubled me deeply and my mother's death in the spring of '64 seemed a crippling blow. Opted out of school right then. Worked as the warehouseman for the water company at Leisure World in Laguna Hills for a while and rode the crest of so many of the social concerns and musical trends that were brewing in the Sixties. Went into a Marine Reserve Helicopter Squadron in Oct. '65 . Served as as machine gunner, then crew chief. Honorable discharge (Sergeant, E-5) Spent a five year career in aerospace doing job set-up for illustrated parts breakdown manuals, first for Boeing's 300 series passenger jets, then for Hughes' radar tracking units. Mastered tech writing, systems analysis, and illustration formats Returned to Santa Ana College in 1971. Research assistant in sociology for professor Royal Martin, focusing on Spatial Relationships. Worked reviewing and evaluating in the credentialing program at SAC. Asked into into the Honors Program with its focus that year ('72-'73) on the concept of 'Freedom.' Awarded grants and scholarship to attend UCLA. Took A.B., Summa Cum Laude, at UCLA in English Literature. Research assistant in Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century English Lit. Set up Qualty of Working Life library in the Graduate School of Management. Lab Assistant in the biochemistry labs of Professor Winston Salser, focusing on tracing DNA with radiation. ng to study 'consciousness,' but wound up focusing on 'alienation,' philosophy of science, and continental philosophy. Teaching Assistant in Introductory Philosophy, Ethics, and Critical Thinking Post-Masters work at UCR in Children's Rights and Responsibilities. Worked assisting students, particularly ESL Students, in UCR Writing Lab. Focussed on formal academic presentation; writing styles; practical application of critical thinking skills; as well as grammar, syntax, and practical semantics. Earned part of my way through school working in residential treatment, as a line counselor, then "social worker/case worker," to gain experience in direct services. Went on to have a 33 year career designing therapeutic treatment programs for seriously traumatized infants, toddlers, children, youths, and their parents; and training programs for the paraprofessional and professional staff who serve them. Often implemented and administered these programs myself. Directly involved in the program development, treatment planning, and case management of more than 3,000 severely troubled and alienated children over three decades. Also extremely proactive in advocating and raising funds for marginalized children and their families. Most fortunate to have worked alongside some of the most kind, creative, and selfless people imaginable. Earned California Community College Lifetime Teaching Credential in Philosophy and World Religions and have taught both. Been retired since 2007. Continue to provide volunteer services to special needs children.
