Peter's Story
Hi,
Its March 27th, 2018. I attended Memo's 75th B-Day celebration in May 2004. I had a great time there and was shocked to see wine and beer at the evening party/dance. I stayed there until 2 AM and there were still serving wine!!!!!
I have a lot to tell you.
Let's start with me getting married to Janet Robertson in August 1970 in the tiny Village of Sturgeon Point. Its near Fenelon Falls. We were only the 6th couple to get married in the octagonal wooden non-denominational church that was about 125 years old at that time.
After the party that night at the Robertson's summer home on the lake, we jumped into my Corvair and started the long drive to Halifax. I was working for GE Canada at the time and I was transferred during the winter before the wedding.
We returned to Toronto in June 1972 and I was enrolled in GE's Financial Management Program (FMP) which was a very strenuous course (in the evening) in 5 graduate level cost and general accounting, financial analysis, MIS and auditing classes. It took 5 semesters to finish. Immediately thereafter, I was invited to join GE's Corporate Audit Staff, and traveled throughout Canada for 3 years auditing 12 different businesses (1 every 3 months).
After that I joined GE Medical Systems Canada in Markham. 18 months later, I was invited to interview at GE Medical's world HQ in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and moved the family (Courtney was born in 1976) in Jan 1979. I worked in GE's X-Ray/CT business first, then in their nuclear Medicine business, and finally was sent to their Ultrasound business near Sacramento California where I lived from 1983 to 1988. Allison was born in Milwaukee in 1980, and Meredith was born in the Sacramento area in 1985.
GE decided to close the Sacramento facility and consolidate it with their Milwaukee operations. Most of the management team left as they did not want to go back to a cold climate but more importantly, the recruiters from Silicon Valley were banging on our doors as the medical device business in California was very strong. I ended up going to Toshiba Medical Systems in Orange County (southern California) and we relocated there.
Toshiba made a very large acquisition and it didn't work out so 6 senior people who had joined them to support their growth were let go (including me) but all were given 9 month severance packages. That allowed me the opportunity to try and start a consulting company, as I had children who didn't want to move. But also there was a large recession going on too.
I hung in or 5 years until an entrepreneur who I had met at a ma...Expand for more
jor medical device trade show convinced me to move to San Francisco (I was now divorced) to join his start-up. Within a year we raised several million $'s to open up a medical software development facility in Nice, France.
This was a very exciting time in my life with things changing daily, and a lot of international travel to Nice, Paris and London, and a lot of domestic travel to many USA cities. This continued for 5 years or so and we tried for an IPO in France, but we didn't make it so we retrenched and tried to start something new. Eventually, we ran out of cash as so many start-ups do.
The founder asked me to join him and start another business for what is called "sweat equity". I gave it all I had for 2 1/2 years and threw in the towel.
I finally caught on with a small business in San Francisco in 2006. Within 4 months they decided to move the company to the Dallas Texas area. I left that business because of ethics issues with the founder. I moved to Fort Myers, Florida in mid 2013.
This how I got to Florida and I like it here a lot!
I hope to see fellow Memo students when I get a chance to fly home to Toronto for summer visits. So it you would like to say hello some time in the future, just email me at peterDOTwatersAT(y)(a)(h)(o)(o)DOT{com}
PS I have 2 grand children ages 12 and 10.
Best,
Peter
Update on September 6, 2013.
Visited Ontario (Toronto, Inisfill and Gravenhurst) in May 2013 and again in June/July 2013 as my older brother Bill had brain cancer. He passed on June 21st.
When I returned to Texas after that, I decided to move to Florida.in JUly 2013. I am loving it here but had a chance to move back to Milwaukee, WI into a senior job but after 2 days of thinking about it, I changed my mind.
Best,
Peter
Update on April 5, 2015. (Easter Sunday). Its 87F!
The 2 grand children are now 9 and 7.
Bought a foreclosure in October 2013 and moved in Oct 28th in Fort Myers, Florida. Loving SW Florida winters! Back in Ontario, hooked up with Bruce Dart and Jack McClean over the last 2 years. Bruce, Jack and I all skipped Grade 7 together at FH Miller Public School! Met with Bruce in Gravenhurst where my sister Mary lives. I met Jack and another old friend Tommy Wilson from the FH Miller neighbourhood in 2016 in the Town of Inisfill where my younger brother Alex lives. Strangely enough, Tommy lived one street away from Alex in Inisfill!
I hope to see Bill Anderson and Kenny Lockett from YMCI (who I have re-connected with on Classmates.com) this summer when I visit my oldest sister and younger brother.
TTFN,
Peter
