Philip's Story

It has been almost 60 years since I left Massachusetts to move to Ridgewood, New Jersey. Since then I have lived in NJ, IA, NJ, WV, NC, SC, FL, KS, NJ, CA, NJ, VA, NJ, PA and TX (It's just the gypsy in my soul!). In September, 2007 my wife and I moved to Frisco, Texas where we currently reside. I have earned two Bachelor and two Masters degrees and try to "keep learning". I have been married to the former Beth Fisher (RHS '69) since 1970 and have one daughter, Jennifer, born in 1973. Jennifer was married in April, 2001. In July, 2002 I became a grandfather (Imagine that!) when Daniel Tyler was born. In March, 2004 "Tyler" was joined by a baby sister Abigail. I really like being a grandfather! I spent 32 years with NJ Bell/AT&T retiring in 1998 under an Early Retirement Plan. Next I spent six years as the Principal & Managing Partner of a start up Strategic Human Resources Consultant Practice, Creative Consulting, Ltd. until we received an offer to buy the practice in 2004 and completed the sale in 2005. Next I was involved in selling residential and commercial Real Estate with Integrity Realtors in both NJ and PA. I am currently working out of the Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate office in Dallas, Texas. I don't do retirement well! Life has been very good to my family and me. I hope it has treated each of you as well! School I moved from Haverhill, Massachusetts to Ridgewood,, New Jersey in 1958. I attended school in Ridgewood, New Jersey until attending Benjamin Franklin Jr. High and graduating from RHS in 1963. College After a year at Iowa Wesleyan College and one at West Virginia Wesleyan College with initial plans to enter the Methodist Ministry. After a change in plans, I returned to New Jersey where I graduated from Rutgers University with a BS in Marketing and a BA in Psychology. I then earned an MBA in Marketing from Rutgers University (1973), a second MBA from the Sloan School at MIT in 1986 and an MMS in Human Resources from Shaftesbury University...Expand for more
(1989), I've served on the faculty at Rutgers, Seton Hall and Columbia Universities. What can I tell you I'm still into continuous learning! While in college I played Varsity Baseball and Football and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon and Sigma Theta Epsilon fraternities, holding office in both. I was also active as a "Local Preacher" (Lay Minister) on the circuit in six churches in West Virginia. Workplace I have held several positions throughout the years. Some of you may remember my High School jobs at the Warner Theater, T&W Ice Cream, the Ridgewood Public Library, Corde Cleaners or the Dairy Queen on Route 17. I worked as a department head and sales representative for Educational Reading Service in Paramus and then "signed on" at NJ Bell in Sales. Through the years I did several sales/marketing, public relatiuons and human resources jobs. In 1983, when the AT&T divestiture was announced, I was the NJ Bell Stakeholder responsible for placement of employees after the 1-1-1984 spin off from AT&T. I joined AT&T at divestiture, in 1984, and remained there until my retirement in 1998. I held positions as National Account Director for several large corporations, National Operations Director for the "in-language - in culture" sales organization, Director of Human Resources. Compensation and Planning at AT&T Computer Systems and Director of Human Resources at AT&T Corporate. After retiring I participated as the Principal and Managing Partner for Creative Consulting, Ltd., a start-up strategic HR consulting firm until we were bought out in 2004. I spent the last three months of 2004 and the first quarter of 2005 in transitioning the practice. Wanting to travel less and spend more time with my grandchildren, I became a real estate agent with Integrity Realtors (licensed in NJ and PA) from 2004 until my move to Texas in September, 2007. I am currently working in Dallas, Texas. It has become obvious to me that I am not any good at retiring! Military Not Applicable
