Philip's Story

Phil lives in the New England coastal town of Westport, Connecticut located along the scenic Long Island Sound (40 miles outside of NYC)…. away from congestion. After John H. Francis Polytechnic High School graduation and living on Peoria Street in Sun Valley for my entire life, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman Apprentice to broaden my horizons and gain occupational experience. Learning typewriter skills at Poly changed my early Navy trajectory by helping me to qualify for technical training after completing boot camp at Naval Recruit Training Center San Diego. Later I graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale through use of the Vietnam G.I. Bill. I retired from the U.S. Navy at the rank of Lieutenant Commander after serving on numerous ships/shore duty assignments, including promotions to Chief Petty Officer, and Chief Warrant Officer (W-4). Highlights were the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) World Cruise, and Pacific/Mediterranean/Persian Gulf/Sarajevo Bosnia-Herzegovina deployments. Shore duty assignments were in San Diego, Pearl Harbor, Midway Island, San Francisco, Naples Italy (2), Philadelphia and Washington, DC. Returning from deployments and new assignments were always a time of excitement and changes. After Navy retirement I enjoyed a second career with BAE Systems Inc. in Washington DC until I fully retired in 2015. I worked at the multinational NATO Seasparrow Missile Program Office for 14 years before moving to the trillion dollar+ stealth multinational aircraft Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) F-35 Program Office, the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world. I now keep busy supporting the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 399, American Legion Post 63 and boating throughout the Long Island Sound. th Dean, a Navy cook, in Pearl Harbor the following year when his San Diego based ship was on deployment. The Hada brothers today manage their family owned Japanese cuisine restaurant located in West LA, Aki Restaurant. Then in 1971 I was bug-eyed and stunned when I spotted classmate Barbara Chun in Waikiki Hawaii,….she was visiting her grandparents in Honolulu. Barbara was very gracious to invite me to meet her grandparents and enjoy a few local Primo brand beers at their home. During my next assignment on Midway Island I was bartending part-time at the enlisted “Acey Deucey” club (slang for pay grade E5-E6 club) when my Poly wood shop classmate, Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Gary Yaeger, visited the establishment. Gary was a new arrival that day to the gooney bird island paradise in the middle of the Pacific and responsible for island recreational fishing boat excursions. Hanging out with Gary and his wife, Vicky, during the island assignment and later in San Diego was always a pleasure. Gary retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Boatswain’s Mate after a successful career. My older brother (Class 67), Victor (Mark), was stationed onboard a Navy destroyer homeported in San Diego during the late 60’s. On deployment to Vietnam, his ship was severely damaged by an enemy missile while operating in the Gulf of Tonkin. Subsequently, he volunteered for the Navy submarine service, Run Silent, Run Deep….he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer (W-3). Several years ago I contacted classmate (Fernangeles Elementary, Byrd JHS, Poly HS) Eddie Bass who was living in the town of DeWitt near Richmond, Virginia. Eddie was recovering from a work related injury after falling from a steep roof. He moved to DeWitt after serving in the U.S. Air Force when his sister, Pam, started a roofing business with her husband. Recent Google search indicated Eddie moved to Las Vegas and is now enjoying Nevada low taxes.
