Philip's Story

Its 02/26/2022. I am still alive! My history is; I was born naked and cold, the oldest of 4 boys. The first 14 years of my life were absolutely uneventful, but I won't go into details. When I arrived at Bristol Eastern, I knew many of you all the way back to kindergarten. All of you were great kids and the memories of you are everlasting. The day after I graduated (1962 to 1966; 4 very extraordinary years) I went to work for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. On June 30, 1967, I enlisted in the Air Force. I did a tour of duty in Southeast Asia and served the remainder of my enlistment at Homestead AFB in Miami/Homestead, Florida. I retired from the military on June 29, 1971. I married in 1970 and have a daughter and son from that marriage. They are fantastic people, and I am extremely proud of both of them. I remarried in 1980 and have been happily married ever since. From 1974 to 1977, I attended Miami-Dade Community College and then Florida International University. I received degrees in Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Psychology. In 1978, I became a Deputy Sheriff with the Miami-Dade Police Department in Miami, Florida. I retired in 2006, after 28 years. When I started the career, I had a full head of hair and all of my body parts. When I retire...Expand for more
d I had substantially less hair and several of my body parts were no longer intact, but I would not trade those 28 years for anything. Being a police officer was and is one of the 3 passions of my life, the other 2 being my wife and my children. I have done nothing to deserve these three extraordinary people in my life, but I couldn't be happier that I have them. Some gifts in life come with no explanation. My wife and I retired high in the Rocky Mountains just outside of Aspen, Colorado. I'm not a religious man, but if God does exist, then I believe he is probably here. This place is as close to heaven as I will get so I will die here, but not just yet. Claude Mockler (class of 65) has been my best friend since the age of 6. Sharon Brandt (class of 67) was a very special girl (I had a serious crush on her, but she never knew) and I never got to know her, my fault. For me the past was what was always behind me. I couldn't go back so why look back. The present and the future was always what mattered. That is no longer the case. As I got older, I realized that there isn't as much of the future in front of me as there is the past behind me. Maybe, reconnecting to the past is an opportunity to enlighten the present and possibly brighten the future.
