Philip's Story
After High School I became a bartender making pretty good money along with the benefits my stepfather's crazy check got me from the VA and SSI. After flunking tennis at TJC and basically partying away my future, I decided that I might as well pay Uncle Sam back 'cause all I was doing was working, partying, getting into trouble, receiving government allowance...and cutting classes. 1984 introduced me to the Army where I was a cannon crewman, driving the howitzer, humpin' and firing 200 lb. TNT loaded bullets. Kinda fun but that didn't help my herniated disk problem I got playing football while at T.K. Gorman.
My life almost ended while at a party in Manhattan, KS., where some guys were approached to "kick my ass" because some other kid was hitting on my girlfriend Michelle while I was in Germany. She spurned him for me. He wanted to do the job but figured he couldn't, so he got these guys to do it for him. It got way out of hand and I ended up getting stabbed in the stomach. Lost 3-5 pints of blood that night and almost died. That's #1.(You'll understand later.)
After working in Kansas for the "Lone Star Cafe" (How fitting!)as night kitchen manager, I finally saved up enough money to get back home to Tyler where I immediately found out that the economy sucked, so I did a whirlwind trip to Virginia to sell resort vacation memberships. In doing so, I ended up losing ALL my posessions, car, furniture, EVERYTHING, but a duffle bag of clothes. Everything went to...Expand for more
crap in Virginia and my wicked stepmother contacted me to live with her in Alabama. Not having much of a choice, I ended up waiting for a plane ticket in Richmond Int'l Airport for 3 days with, like I said, nothing.
I finally got a bus to Birmingham, AL where all the promises I was told were lies, got a job with a silkscreen company as managing Art Director, and payed my way to UAB (college). Pres. Bush Sr. has one of my T-Shirts designs. (No picture of him holding it, though.(Too, bad)
So in 1998, while the Olympic soccer practices were in B'ham for Atlanta, I was finally doing what I really wanted. Graphic Design for Television. I was happy to say that I was senior graphic designer (not 'coz of my age, ha!) and ended up winning 2 Emmy awards for my efforts. Including the 2 summers I worked in the oilfields, working for NBC13 was absolutely the best job I ever enjoyed. After being layed off in '04, I went back to something I did from age 13-17. Thought I'd never do it again....working at a Country Club! It's supposed to be my in-between jobs, job. I've been doing for 6 years now, and I'm a manager.
Now for #2.(Remember #1?) In '06 I had a nasty alien type of thing called Diverticulitis (Diver-what?!) and I came extremely close to biting the dust again. So if you get it, take care of it!!!! I guess since I had the surgery for it, I can eat what I want.
Alright, that's it. I Hope I didn't bore you too much. Drop me a line when you get a chance! Philip
