Philip's Story
Following completion of my medical training in Boston and Oxford I accepted the position of Senior Investigator in the Medicine Branch of the National Cancer Institute, and Head of Clinical Pharmacology.. I subseqently served as Scientific Director of the Lombardi Cancer Research Center, and the inaugural Scholl Professor of medical oncology and pharmacology. During that period of my career I was President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Chariman of the Medical Oncology Committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Chairman of the FDA's Oncologic Drugs Advisory Commttee and had a White House appointment to the National Cancer Advisory Board. In 1987 I founded a publicly-traded pharmaceutical company and took three projects through FDA and European regulatory approvals. After the company was sold I accepted an appointment at the University of Oxford as a Visiting Professor in Cancer Pharmacology for about a decade. I received an honorary doctorate of science (DSc (hon) from Rutgers University, The Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni Award and a Doctor Honoris Causa from the National Universiy of Rosario, Argentina. I was also was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Medicine, London, and and he Royal College of Medicine and Surgery, Glasgow. After having worked so intensively throughout my career in oncology and cancer research I am now having a difficult time slowing down. In response to the need to keep active I have constructed a menu of professional activities that serve to keep me sufficiently engaged. The last all consumiing assignment was my appointment to the ...Expand for more
board of the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), including serving as the Chairman of the Board during the final year and a half of my tenure. CASIS manages the US National Research Laboratory on the International Space Station and works in cooperation with NASA. The appointment provided an opportunity to work on a broad range of challenging scientific projects, and with some very interesting and very intelligent people.. I stepped out of the organization in 2019. I continue to consult on development and regulatory issues for the biotech/pharmaceutical industries and serve on a number of scientific advisory boards, as well as the board of a local Florida-based Boys & Girls Club (I entered the national Alumni Hall of Fame a few years ago, bridging from my former Asbury Park Boys Club affiliation).. That leaves time for tennis, biking swimming and photography- I have had several photography shows in the Philadelphia area and in Florida, (but no golf). I was recently elected a “Master” in the American College of Physicians, but my family refuses to adopt the title in our casual conversations. I now spend half the year at our home on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, Florida and the rest in Bryn Mawr,, Pennsylvania, about 12 miles west of Philadelphia. I have a daughter/pediatrician living in Philadelphia and a PhD/Computer Science son working in Silicon Valley. But these days, as is probably the case for most of us, it is all about the “oh, so gifted” grandchildren and watching their rapid development. They are the future. We are becoming “the past” at an accelerating pace.
