Philip's Story

You can find me on Facebook as "Phil Stern" for personal stuff, and Philip Stern for business. Look for me there! --------------------------------------- Life I live on an Island called Little Torch Key. 25 miles north of Key West, FL I left New Brunswick two weeks after graduation from NBHS when I left for Navy Boot Camp. I have lived in Illinois, NY, NY (Twice), Philadelphia (Twice), Virginia (Twice), California, Colorado, Texas, and Florida (Twice). Overseas, I was in Vietnam, Okinawa, Mexico (3 times), Belize, England (Twice), Scotland (Twice), Germany (Twice), Norway (Twice), France, Italy (4 times), Portugal, Spain, Gibraltar, Monaco, Greece (3 times, Israel (Twice), United Arab Republics (Twice), and I have been throughout the Caribbean many times. I am a student of personal development. I even found time to do some volunteer work for the Veterans Administration. I joined a Marine Corps League (MCL) in November 2005. As a Navy Hospital Corpsman (Medic) with the Marines in Vietnam, I was allowed to join. I was a member of the Honor Guard. I conducted formal military funerals at the Florida National Cemetery and other cemeteries in central Florida. I was the MCL Liaison to the Tampa VA Hospital. I was also the MCL National Deputy Representative for the VA Voluntary Services. I volunteered at both the Tampa and Bay Pines VA Hospitals I am a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society. I have sung with, and twice been a member of their International Chorus Contest Champion Chorus, The Alexandria Harmonizers. I was a Certified Contest Administrator. And in my spare time... School When I went to NBHS, the only thing I wanted out of high school was ME! I later learned to love education and training. I will always be a student of something. I'll never tell about my biggest crush. Mrs. Christel inspired me most. She believed in me and my potential. She drove me hard when I needed it. Later in English classes in college, I excelled because I finally "GOT IT". Thanks Mrs C. Next in line would be Mr. Quigley, the trainer. He helped shape the paramedical professional I would become in my Navy career. College I started college after about three years in the Navy. I took many night courses over a long period of time. I received an Associates Degree from George Washington University in Allied Health in 1979. A few years after leaving the Navy, I went back to college full time in 1991. I had to take a number of classes over again. I graduated from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA in May 1993 with a BS in Business Administration, majoring in Management Information Systems/Decision Sciences. It was 23 years from the time I took my first college class until I graduated at 46 years old. I worked part time while finiishing school at a Funeral Home, but that's another story. Work After my career in the Navy, I earned my college degree and then went to the corporate information technology world in the Washington, DC area.I worked in the IT profession for many years and then moved into Process Engineering. in April 2005, I left the cold of the north and government...Expand for more
contracting and moved to West Central Florida to raise Alpaca and start some businesses. After a few successes, failures, and changes in health. I sold the alpaca business and closed some other businesses. I in July 2009, I formed my a corporation to put under an umbrella all business operations. It allows me to add more divisions without having to start any other new business entity. A month after I formed the Corporation, I had to have my left lower leg amputated because of a chronic bone infection following surgery 10 months earlier. I have recovered very well. in March 2014 I reinstated the corporation. I am now semi-retired and loving it. I can more allow time for fun. I'm a member of the Key West and Tampa Bay Parrot Heads in Paradise. We have a lot of social events, but we also do a lot of community service. We cleaned about 2 miles of shoreline every two months (and then go party). We held fundraisers (A Sunset Cruise and donate money to Endowment Fund for Marine Environment Science, and money to the Clearwater Aquarium). Since my move to the Lower Keys, I have also just joined the Key West Parrot Head Club and the Southernmost Coconut Castaways. It is also a friend club of Howard Livingston and raise money for local charities as well as Kare Kamp, a camp sponsored by KOA for kids with cancer. We raised $93K in 2013. So in my spare time... Sail, Scuba, Snorkel, play bongos and mini steel drum. l I do wood carvings, and work with driftwood. I am in the process of making my own wooden leg for the many pirate activities here in the Florida Keys. I'm teaching myself how to play regular steel drums. Get yourself lost in the reggae mon! My uniform of the day now consists of ball cap, tee shirts, shorts, New Balance footwear, and sun glasses. Come on down, Don't forget the Parrot Head Rum. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I always wanted to be a Sailor when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right. My goal was to become a Chief Petty Officer. I achieved that in December 1978. On the sailor side I;ve owned a few sailboats and a power boat. I prefer sailing, It peaceful and relaxing, but too much work. So I sold the sailboat and use my powerboat all the time. Too blow off steam, I Cycle. I have a Catrike Villager recumbent trike cycle which I can pedal with my Prosthetic leg without falling off. The wildest thing I ever did in school: Cut last period study hall for three months before graduation. I got caught just before graduation and placed on after school suspension in the office. After only 3 days of me staring at VP Gordon, he discontinued my suspension. The one person from my past who I miss the most is Joe Clipston. We were the best friends for almost 30 years. Joe died in December of 2008. If I won $100 Million, I give part to the Wounded Warrior Program, VA Adaptive Sports Program, Amputee support groups, diabetes research, and spend the rest of the money on a big boat, Oceanfront house with a pool. Sugar free or no sugar added deserts.
