School
My favorite teachers while going to school in Carthage were Lee Stevens (the first adult who talked to me and treated me like an adult--a big influence on my own choices in interacting with students), that 9th grade lab-coated physics teacher that had an amazingly dry and sarcastic sense of humor but very high expectations (Mr./Dr. England?), and Howard South, who taught me how to think about and appreciate life during my two years as his art student.
If I could have a "redo," I'd have skipped sports (didn't do a thing for me except retard my personal development) and just had more fun. Otherwise, not a horrible experience.
Looking back with the perspective of having taught in two huge schools, I do regret that CHS' curriculum and activities were a little narrow. My current students and peers can't believe that, from 7th to 12th grade, I was only required to read THREE full-length literary works: OF MICE AND MEN (Miss-uh Phipps-uh, 9th gr...Expand for more
ade), THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY, and HAMLET (both for Mr. Whistler my senior year).
I also feel great pain and embarrassment when I recall my own (deadly) self-seriousness and the sad excuse for writing I did for the school paper (yikes). But I guess that's high school, baby.
College
University of Arkansas--First time I met other people that thought like I did and dug the same stuff. Have never had as much fun. My three best friends there are still my three best friends (excluding my wife). Had so much fun, in fact, I had to leave or die.
Southwest Missouri State--Live from "Banks and Bibles" Missouri! Great teachers, horrible campus, not much fun at all...and I was probably better off.
Workplace
I've no complaints about either of the school systems for which I've worked. I've had near total creative freedom in the classroom from day one, and I've exploited that to the nth degree. Dubya's "No Child Left Behind" morass is threatening to gut what's best about American public schools, but he doesn't know about "the circle game."
Teaching is really a fabulous job, despite what they say. It's emotionally and mentally rewarding, stimulating, challenging, EXTREMELY amusing--and it keeps one clear on what "people" are REALLY like, because, well, we get a real cross-section of the American public. If I hadn't been teaching for 20 years, I'm not sure I'd like people now. I'm now teaching two kids who are offspring of former students (a sobering reminder of how long I've been doing this) and several of my former students are among our very best friends.
My wife, Nicole, teaches too, so obviously I can't get enough of it. I am very thankful this profession exists, because otherwise I'm pretty useless!
