Norma's Story

Everybody in the country calls you by your first and middle name. That's how you remember where you came from. My country name is "Norma Jean" or to close friends and family, it's "Shortie". I was born in the small country village of Ritta Village, suburbs of Clewiston, Florida. My mother and father had 5 girls, two of which, are deceased; the second daughtger, Martha and the baby girl, Dorothy. That leaves, Bunia Mae, Voncile and myself. Unfortunately, we had no brothers. I have three children; David, age 40; Andre, age 37 and Tia, age 25. They are the world to me. My oldest is a University of Miami Alumnae and recently promoted to the Head Coach of the Lightning Football team at Dr. Michael M. Krop Sr. High School in Miami. My second is a professional "CASANOVA" trying to find someone to settle down with by coming into life from the backdoor. (Just kidding, but seriously....). My daughter graduated with honors in Pharmacy and obviously seeking to be her own boss scheduling her own hours and days she prefers to work. She's waiting on that phone call from anyone except Walgreens or CVS. I have four beautiful grandchildren. David has a 17 year old daughter just entering college-- she wants to be a pediatric nurse, and then there's little David in 10th grade, whose only interest is in basketball. Had to put him in private school to let him know that education is important. Then the 37 y/o/ gigalo (sp.) has a 16 year old who's all about the telephone and matching attire. God forbid if you say it's "black", she'll swear it's "blue". She has an opposition syndrone. Then there's the 6 y/o. He's going to be like his Romeo daddy. He's already a lady's man-- dresses well, smells good, need a cellphone to get his schedule in order, can barely spell his middle name. A talker, got all the lines, but refuses to answer the right questions. I've led a wonderful life, thanks be to God. My mother is 91 years old and she is still a darling that thinks everybody in the world is good. She just loves everybo...Expand for more
dy (especially, Barack Obama). "He's cute" she says. Nowadays, she loves muscic. She doesn't care what kind. The kids teases her with R&B and she pats her feet just the same and she says, Oh, I like that song". She thinks it's gospel. My mother and father were married for 67 years. Since my dad passed away 6 years ago, mom gets very lonely, so the family visits often to keep her mind going. I have spent almost 30 years in the legal profession. I'm now retired, living in Miami. I came to Miami in 1969 and found myself working as a entry-level legal secretary in some of the most prestigeous law firms at that time. I fell in love with the profession, attended Nova Southeastern University, earned a Bachelor's Degree in Pre-Law Administration and became a nationally certified Paralegal for the last 20 years. Recommendation to first year law school by Gars & Dixon, P.A. in 1977-- and that first year of law school contributed to the failure of my marriage. Over the years, I developed superior skills in research and writing; received an honorary award from the Florida Supreme Court in the submission of an amicus brief on teenage strip dancing in nightclubs. I became a single parent when my daughter was 3 y/o. For twelve years, I became the legal assistant to the first African-American judge on the Federal bench in the Southern District of Florida. After that tenure, I worked in most of the Big 8 law firms in Dade and Broward Counties, ending my legal career as a criminal defense paralegal for a renowned law firm in Broward County, representing high-profile clients, i.e. O.J. Simpson, Tilly Tuttle, etc. It's now showtime. I spend my time going to church, thanking God for his blessings. I have a mother who loves me, children who adore me and a church family who holds me deeply in their hearts. My friends never forget me nad my enemies can just bleep, bleep) for me. Will be Black by popular demand! Let's get this party rolling. Give a you know what for your family and our children. Thks for now.
