Phillip's Story

PROFILE of PHIL ZAMPINO Updated 5/18/2008 Phil Zampino, 60 years of age, married to Joanne Muntean, combined having 7 children and 15 grandchildren, a life resident of Canton, living 34 years in the Plain Local School District. Phillip graduated from Timken Vocational High School in 1965 and volunteered to serve three (3) years in the Military from 1965 to 1968. Phillip graduated from the Armed Forces School of Music in 1966 and served in the 1st U.S. Army Headquarters Band until honorably discharged as a Specialist (Sergeant) E-5 in 1968. In 1968, Phil Founded: Zampino¿s Drum Shop/Zampino¿s School of Music, PAZ Publishing, PAZ Percussion, and Drummers Distribution. He was forced to retire from the U.S. Postal Service in 1977 due to a back injury. Phil has been a member of the NALC, Local 238, since 1968. He is a Lifetime Member of the Timken Alumni Association and is a member of the Plain Local Schools Alumni Association. Phil is a member and former officer of the North Canton Elks (BPOE) Lodge 2029 ¿ winning the first Ritualistic Award for the Lodge in 1979, 3rd Degree member of the North Canton Knights of Columbus Council, American Legion and the Son¿s of Italy Ben V. Marconi Lodge 1628. He has been a Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge Counselor for many years. Phil was a coach for the YBA Basketball Program at the North Canton YMCA, Plain Local Midget Football League and Holly Hills Baseball Program. He has been a volunteer worker for the Italian-American Festival. Phil was elected as Regional Director of the National Association of Federal Injured Workers of which he remains a member. Phil is a former elected officer of North Canton St. Paul¿s Parish Council, and has been an acolyte for approximately 50 years. Phil, a two-time cancer patient and survivor, was a volunteer for the Canton Area American Cancer Society and wrote four songs for the ACS cancer survivors celebration. In 2004 he founded C-PAG [Cancer Patients Advocacy Group], a Cancer Support Group. Phil was a member of the Canton Musicians, Local 111, for approximately 40 years. He is a past member of the Better Business Bureau, North Canton Chamber of Commerce, and National Association of Music Merchants of which he was nominated for national office. He formerly was on the advisory board and served as an executive officer of the Canton Bluecoats Drum Corps Organization. Phil was responsible for donating over $40,000 in the 1980¿s in order for the Canton Bluecoats to get back up and running. Phil was an elected officer of the North Canton Chamber of Commerce and was the first head chairperson to organize, ¿North Canton Chautauqua Days.¿ He was on the Board of Advisors for ¿The Rainbow Repertory Co¿. and was the Chairman for the Plain Township PARC Development Committee. Phil served on the Stark County Citizens¿ Education Subcommittee Council for Non-Violence in Stark County. Phil has been a strong advocate for ¿Character Counts in Stark County¿ and has implemented this into his teaching. Phil served on the advisory COE boards in Jackson, North Canton, and Plain Local Schools. He has been a volunteer in the Plain Local Schools since 1975. Phil is the Founder and Past President of P.L.I.M.P.A. (The Plain Local Instrumental Music Patrons Association), and the Amore Jazz Festival. He was a committee member for the Arts in Plain Program, President¿s Committee, Long Range Planning, and was a member of the Plain Community Task Force and served on the Strategic Planning Community Perception Committee in the Plain Local School District. Phil is the Founder and former director of the All Star Youth Band, Latin Caravan Group, and Bluecoats Cadet Band. In 1996, he was a mentor for ¿Youth Leadership Collaboration 2000"-The Education Enhancement Partnership. Phil has been a part-time faculty instructor at Kent State University Stark Campus since 1987. He is a former member of Rotary International and served on several educational programs. Phil served as an advisory board member to Spotlight on Youth. Phil has been a music educator since 1961, and has been a lecturer and clinician for many years. In 1993 he won the ¿Private Teacher of the Year Award.¿ Phil Zampino, the author, has written twenty-six educational music books, which have been published. In 2004, 2005 & 2008, Phil was recognized world-wide in the Modern Drummer Magazine for two of his books rated ****; ¿Theory Scales & Chords for the Percussion Student¿ and ¿Different Brush Beats.¿ In February 2008, MD Magazine credited Phil as being a ¿Master of Brushes.¿ Phil remains an active member of the Percussive Arts Society, Music Educators National Conference, and the Ohio Music Educators Association. Phil wrote a music article ¿Should all Student¿s Studying Music be Treated the Same¿ - for the OMEA Triad Music Magazine which was published and recognized world-wide. Alumnus. Phil was presented ¿The Distinguished Alumnus Award¿ and was honored in June 2008. Phil was elected from 1989-2002 to the Plain Local School Board. He was elected to be the Vice-President of the Plain Local School Board in 1993 and during his term of office he received an award by the Stark County Board of Education for his contribution to improving education in Stark County. In 1994 and in 1998, Phil Zampino was elected President of the Plain Local School Board. In 1997 and 2001, Phil was again elected as the Vice-President of the School Board. Phil retired from the Plain Local School Board in 2002. He is a sustaining member of the Ohio School Boards Association and National School Boards Association. Phil is listed in ¿Who¿s Who in America.¿ Many, because of his life ambition and theme, think of Phil as a person ¿Devoted to Education and Community¿ History of Zampino¿s Drum Shop/School of Music 1. Phil Zampino, Sr. began playing the drums in 1952. 2. Phil Zampino began his teaching career in 1961 with the ¿Buckeye School of Music¿. 3. Phil knew immediately in 1961 that he would continue having a career in teaching and that he would open a music store some day. Phil worked in sales, marketing and advertising for several music stores. 4. Phil was a percussion section leader in his high school band his sophomore, junior and senior years. 5. Phil received the best section leader award two years in a row. 6. In 1963-64, he began teaching from his home and traveled to homes to give students lessons. 7. In 1964, Phil began teaching several small Drum Corps. 8. Phil received outstanding band member of the year. 9. In his School of Music Class, he was only one of three who graduated from the Armed Forces School of Music. His GPA was 3.75. 10. He was in the 1st Army Headquarters Band stationed near Washington, DC for 3 years. 11. Phil was the only drummer selected from the Headquarters Band to perform with a USO show band, which did extensive traveling during the Vietnam War. 12. In 1968, Phil was offered the drumming spot with ¿James Brown¿. Phil chose to teach, operate his business, and perform with many different rock groups and jazz bands. He continued to follow his dream of opening a music store specializing in Percussion. 13. In August of 1968, Phil founded Zampino¿s Drum Shop/School of Music, PAZ Publishing, PAZ Percussion and Drummer¿s Distribution and operated all of these businesses from his home. He also taught many drum corps during this time period. 14. Phil also chose to work for the Post Office starting in the fall of 1968. 15. In 1970, he began training students to become student teachers. 16. In 1971, he began a student group called the ¿Percussionists¿. 17. In 1972, Phil injured his back working at the post office. 18. In 1973, Phil began other home business percussion outlets to percussion private teachers in the Massillon/Canton area. Soon afterwards he expanded throughout the USA. 19. In 1974-75, Phil began a mail-order business for percussion. His Student ¿Percussionists¿ won 1st place in a music competition in the State of Ohio. 20. The mail-order business grew rapidly. Additions to his home were necessary for stocking merchandise. 21. The business grew to be the 6th largest volume store in sales across the USA with several major manufacturers. 22. In 1979-80, the business was moved to its current location on Main Street in North Canton. 23. In 1981, Phil opened another affiliate store ¿Columbus Percussion Center¿ in Columbus, Ohio. 24. In 1982, Phil opened another affiliate store in Peoria, Illinois. 25. In 1982, Phil hired Scott Grewell to become the store manager, to teach at the store and to take over his drumming spot with the Sam Coletti Orchestra. Scott had already been selling for Zampino¿s for nearly 6 years. 26. In 1983, Phil opened another affiliate store in Cleveland, Ohio. 27. In 1984, Phil opened another affiliate store in Dayton, Ohio. 28. In 1990, Phil began selling the affiliate stores. 29. In 1992-93, it is believed Phil had his first heart attack. 30. Ongoing heart treatment began. 31. In 1996, Phil was diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer. 32. Phil sold the business to Scott Grewell when he learned that he might have only one or two years to live. The business was sold with the intent that education of students would remain the top priority. The name of the business and the building is still owned by Phil Zampino. 33. During Chemotherapy in 1996, Phil began compiling his previous 40 years of percussion writings. He put them into 26 books and published those books. 34. In 2002, Phil¿s cardiologist confirmed that Phil had a heart attack on January 3rd and on June 1st. However, the new heart medication that Phil is taking seems to be helping his cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia. 35. In May 2002, Phil¿s oncologist stated, ¿I believe you are cured of Cancer.¿ Cancer returned in June 2003. 36. In 2007 it was a very difficult year for Phil with heart issues. The Cancer is currently dormant. 37. In 2004, 2005 & 2008 two of Phil¿s books, ¿Theory Scales & Chords for the Percussion Student¿ and ¿Different Brush Beats¿ was recommended and recognized by the worldwide-distributed magazine, ¿Modern Drummer.¿
