Crystal's Story

Life You may remember me as 'Crys' Bridgers back at CHHS. I did not attend our 1970 graduation because I went directly to Charlotte to try and get a job in advertising. That proved to be very discouraging, since I was told at every interview to go to school. By day I went to Central Piedmont Community College (Visual Design/ Advertising Art), and worked at the Sears Jewelry department by night. My pay did not include any commission and by the beginning of my second year there I found a more lucrative job at night waitressing at a place called 'The 'Ol Smokehouse'. In 1972 my sister Amy talked me into going to work at a resort called St. Mary's on a leased portion of the Black Foot Indian Reservation. It was located in just outside of Glacier National Park about 25 miles south of Alberta Canada. This was a job lasting for the summer and was a wonderful experience working with kids my age from all over the states. (even a few from CH!) After my return I moved to Chapel Hill again and was offered a job as manager at the brand new Baskin Robbins ice cream store located on Franklin Street. I went to the Baskin Robbin's in Cameron Village to learn how to make and decorate ice cream cakes, which boosted our business. After 3 years I had saved enough money to move to Greensboro and enroll in at UNC-G (Fine Art.) I did this for about two years until it became impossible to pay for my living experiences and school. I was offered the Food and Beverage Director job at the Market Street Hilton after having worked there since moving to Greensboro, so I quit school and went to work full time. By 1977 I had had enough of promises of pay raises and the work became mundane. So I qu...Expand for more
it and found a job decorating cakes at Food World for a year. I moved back to CH and worked at Rolane's until the end of Christmas, when my Uncle who owned the Dairy Bar, (Yarborough's) that my grandfather had owned (which included a milk processing plant) in the 1940's called Fairview Dairy in Sanford. After managing there for three years, Cam Hill came down to see me and offer a management job at Crook's Corner, which I reopened early in 1981. That is when I met David Sparrow, not Don and Jean's 'David', but a football hero from Pittsboro, born in 1945. He provided the barbeque to the restaurant since the health department nixed the use of the inside 'pit' at Crook's. We fell in love and eventually married in 1984. He already had been doing Pig Pickin' parties for several years and I joined him in making Pig-In-The-Pen Catering a very lucrative business. The relationship started to fall apart gradually until I decided to leave him. He filed for divorce in 1995. I changed my name 'Sparrow' back to Bridgers the day my divorce was final in late 1996. If some of you might recall, I had been separated since March at our 1995 reunion. At the time I was in the nursing program at CCCC in Sanford. I met my present husband, Jeffrey Baldessari, over the internet! Yes, we became pen pals and e-mailed each other for several months before meeting in person the day after Thanksgiving in 1997. One year later we were married at the NC Zoo... where we met for the first time! Jeffrey and I live in Pinehurst and will celebrate our 10th anniversary in November this year. It has been a match made in Heaven I am happy to say, we are like two peas in a pod and as happy as can be!
