Phyllis's Story

I did one of these "25 random things about me" on Facebook and just decided to copy it here, with a few updates. It touches on a lot of things that I've done over the last 40 years! 1. I grew up in southern New Jersey and used to play kissing tag with the neighborhood boys - not by choice, they just chased us down to kiss us. 2. My first job was working in a bank the summer after I graduated from high school. I had sent in an application, but was told there were no openings. My mother made me go talk to the mayor of our town (who owned the bank) and he took me to personnel and made them give me a job. I worked there for four summers! 3. I got the travel bug after going on a cruise to the Caribbean with my parents my freshman year in college. My mother took me because she was afraid my father was going to cancel out and she didn't want to go alone. 4. I was so bad at writing letters when I was in college (yes, we actually had to write them by hand on stationery) that I almost blew it with my boyfriend when I didn't answer his letters during the summer. Thank goodness I finally came around - we've been married for 36 years now! But also thank goodness for email, or I would have no friends..... 5. In college I majored in physical therapy, then changed to biology.....couldn't find a job.....got married.....had kids......went back to school to get my M.Ed. in early childhood education.....then FINALLY had a career. 6. During the marriage and kids thing in #5, but before going back to school, I worked part time for a YMCA as: an aerobic dance instructor, pre/post natal exercise instructor, water fitness instructor, preschool swim instructor, life guard, and aquatic director. Oh, and I also taught Lamaze prepared childbirth classes. 7. I named my daughter after a Barbara Streisand song - "Jenny Rebecca" (four days old....how do you like the world so far?). 8. When our kids were little, we wanted to travel, but the only way we could afford it was to go camping...in a tent. There's just nothing like drying a sleeping bag in a restroom with a hair dryer after the rain leaks into your tent..... 9. I've always wanted to sing like Karen Carpenter. I'm sad that she died so young. I do love to sing, though! Although I'm not sure how much I sound like her..... 10. I LOVE Christmas music. I usually start playing it in November, but then my kids make me stop the day after Christmas. This year, being in Italy without the kids, I played it all through January, too! 11. I've been a late bloomer all my life - first date at 17, first time for.....well, never mind that! Or maybe I just have an on-going middle age crisis. It seems I've tried so many new things during middle age than when I was young - even some things that would have been better to do when I was young, like sea kayaking, dog sledding, white water rafting, etc.! I often find myself saying, "Why didn't I try that years ago? I could have been doing it all this time!" 12. I had a complete hysterectomy in 2002 because of a huge mass of ovarian cysts. I will never skip another appointment with my gynecologist...... 13. In 1993 I drove to Alaska with my three kids (yes, I really did). We spent 6 weeks in a minivan and a tent, and all of us came back alive! Only on the way back home, we had to get out the map, leave the toll highway and find some back roads because I didn't have enough money left to pay the tolls! 14. One of my more embarrassing moments.....while in Alaska, we took a sightseeing flight over the glaciers. The plane was about the size of our minivan. Every time the pilot spotted some wildlife, he would say something like, "I think I see some bighorn sheep over there" and would promptly bank the plane and zoom toward some mountain. When we landed and the plane finally came to a stop, I scrambled to the door, opened it, and promptly puked all over the tarmac. 15. I LOVE horseback riding! I even got to chase cows one ti...Expand for more
me on this ranch in Colorado.....City Slickers, here I come! 16. Someday I am going to live in Breckenridge, Colorado. I've been saying that for over 30 years, but this time I really mean it! 17. I helped my mother plan her funeral a few days before she died. It was both awful and wonderful at the same time..... 18. I gave birth to my son, Dan, on February 22, 1980, at home.....on purpose! During the night that I was in labor with him, the weather kept changing and included rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog, and high winds. I still think it meant he is destined for something special.... He was born the next morning, and that night the US beat the Russians in hockey to go on and win the gold medal in the Olympics! 19. I love pets, and have had them all my life - dogs mostly, but a few cats, too. Who else can you talk to and not have them talk back to you (well, except for Simon my current cat who always answers me)? 20. I once threatened to shoot my children and kill them if I ever caught them smoking....my mother smoked and suffered from lung cancer, emphysema, etc. And I was sick all the time as a child with upper respiratory infections. Miraculously, they stopped when I left home to go to college...... Fortunately for my kids, they don't smoke. 21. The Appalachia Service Project has been a huge part of my life. It is a home repair ministry that I first got involved in with my church in Pennsylvania in 1983. Thanks Carl and Jack for taking on this ministry when I moved from Ohio and Tennessee! 22. Every time I have moved, it has been SO hard! I HATE saying goodbye to people.....but the thing that got me through it every time was my faith - I knew God had a plan for me and would help me through it. Each time I have found a wonderful church and church family to be a part of in my new town. 23. I never knew how much fun acting could be until I started doing worship skits and then murder mysteries! Another thing I wish I had started when I was younger.....now I'm taking an acting class at a nearby college. 24. I never dreamed I'd live in another country some day - and such a wonderful one at that! I loved living in Italy, but I also really missed home. The two years we spent there (2008 & 2009) were awesome! 25. I now have the urge to do all sorts of creative things. I want to write - a book (novel), a children's book, a play,a devotional. I want to learn to paint watercolors, and I finally want to learn how to play my hammered dulcimer. I also want to do something with photography, but I'm not sure what. I wonder how many of these things I will actually do?....... It's a bit of a challenge to try to condense a lifetime into a few short paragraphs...... I would like to know why so many people are joining Classmates.com but not really doing anything.....people keep going back and forth signing each other's guestbook, but when you click on their profile, there are no pictures, no stories - not even a profile picture for many of them. Come on people! Give us some info about your life over the last 40 years! January 4, 2011 My husband likes to take me on surprise trips - it started out several years ago with "mystery dates" - he would just plan an evening and not tell me what we were going to do. Then he started "mystery weekends", usually on a long weekend. We've been to Maggie Valley, NC, Asheville, NC, Washington DC, the Grand Canyon (in conjunction with a business trip for him), and Minnesota/South Dakota when I was missing snow and winter (we don't get much here). While we were living in Italy, he took me to Capri one time and Malta another - that was pretty darn awesome! Our latest "mystery trip" was last week back to Arizona for a whole week this time! He gives me clues ahead of time, but doesn't actually let me know where we are going until we are on our way. It was beautiful - I posted some pictures. My friends all love my husband, and my friends' husbands hate him!
