Phyllis's Story
First and foremost, I remember all the guys singing doowop in the school yard of P.S.164, we used to sit and listen to them. Hanging around the front of the building used to be our fun, waiting for the rides to come that were on the trucks, the watermelon man, and Joe the Good Humor (ice cream) man, walking down rigning his bells for us to buy ice cream. We used to hang out at Jackie Bookters candy store on the corner of 42nd, and 15th ave. And go to Gino's Pizza on the corner of 42nd and 13th Ave. to listen to the juke box, and eat pizza. We used to go up to the roof to sun bathe, and play in the alley. Winter time we used to play King of the Mountain, from the plows that used to leave big mounds of snow on the streets. I remember parents yelling from their 3rd floor windows for their kids to come up for dinner. There were sooooo many great times!!! I think of them often, and wish there was a time to go back relive it all over again. Montauk was a stones throw away, I remember running home to have lunch, and then going back, making it before the bell rang. We never needed cars, our legs did all the work. 13th Ave. was the place to shop back then. Hamiltons Grocery, all the produce stands, the (smelly) chicken market, Itlian ices, Italian food, the Jewish Deli, the Chinese restaurant, Etc, Etc. Those were the good old days!!!! Hope this brought back some memories for some of you!!!!
And then there was school, Remembering all the fun at FDR, Cathy Debenedetto, Cathy (Moose) Mosca, Maureen (MO), Connie (always high), Pat Vaccarino, Jack Scotto (I dated), Josephine DeMarco, Ronald Diepietro, Aldo DelConsole, Louis Desiano,Louis D'amico, Laurie Creditor,Angie Capozzi,Louis Buccellato, Jakie Burnett,Carmen Cabana, Lucy Calcagno, Sal (Sally Smoke) Bonsignore, Judy Bisking,Joyce Avento, Roanld Califano, Rosanne Cretella, Josephine DeMarco,Denise Dunning, William Dolan, Lora Elliot,Arlene Drago,to name a few! We all had such a great time! Hope to hear from any of you soon.
