Quin's Story

Life After H.S... the short version I served in Army for 3 yrs, married Shand Stringham, an officer in the US Army, traveled around the world, adopted our five foreign children, graduated from small Oklahoma Univ in Home Economics with minors in Family Life Ed and Spanish in 1985, settled in Carlisle, PA after Shand's 26 yrs in Army, currently active in LDS church, home school my youngest, work as a Wellness Consultant and network marketer, I'm healthy, happy, and always busy! And I am also a grandmother to 3 and I love that! Military I entered the Army in June after graudating from HS in 1974. I was sent to Ft Jackson, S.C. for Basic Training. It was a rude awakening. I did well but not without a lot hard work and challenge. In those days we were still the WAC's... the Women's Army Corp. I had left home because of a challenging situation and felt like I had gone from the frying pan into the fire! From basic, I went to Ft Sill, Oklahoma to be trained in meteorology. I was a 93F... a Field Artillery Ballistic Meteorologist Crewman. I went to school and was the top in my class and was promoted to PFC upon graduation of school. I was on orders to go to Germany but because I was one of the first women trained in this MOS the Army was not prepared for women to go to field units. At the time I was very upset and tried to fight it but in the end I ended up being tricked into waiving my Germany guarantee and so I ended up staying at Ft Sill. In the end it was really a blessing in disguise! Religion is a blessing... I stayed at the Field Artillery school at Ft Sill and worked in the met station. We worked long shift hours, especially during tornado season. Instead of just running the met for the field artillery, we also ran met for the National Weather Service. Then I was offered an office job by the school's SGM. I hated typing in HS and never thought I would admit to anyone that I typed. But actually the job was not just working in an office. I had many responsibilities but with normal hours and I no longer had to pull night CQ duty at the battery. It was actually an answer to my p...Expand for more
rayers because it allowed me to participate in the single adult activities at church, as I converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints after being given The Book of Mormon by a boyfriend in May of 1975. Love and marriage... It was at the LDS church's single's group that I met my husband Shand in June of 1976, who was also in the military, orignally from Bountiful, Utah. He was an officer (and a gentleman of course) and I was enlisted, so when he actually proposed to me, I was almost done with my three year enlistment. We decided to wait until I was out of the Army to actually get married. We were engaged though for two months while I was still in. He offered his commanding officer, who was the General of III Corp Artillery at the time, to resign his commission if there was a problem with our engagement. The General just gave Shand a big hug and told him how his wife Nellie was also enlisted when he was a 2nd LT (officer) and he could totally identify. He was very supportive and they came to our wedding reception that we had in Lawton, Oklahoma. Travels.... Although I never made it to Germany (almost in 1990) we did live in Mexico, Peru (S America) and S. Korea, as well as several different states in the US. I was very blessed to be able to travel around, which was one of my desires in going in to the military. Feeling still in the military.... Also my military experience prepared me well for better serving my husband with his 26 year career in the Army! I didn't have to learn a new language and when he worked long hours and had no say so about some things, I knew exactly what he was going through! Now my eldest son Carson is in the military, serving currently in Iraq (07, 08), and my other son Caleb, will be leaving to go to Iraq this year (08). He is in the PA National Guard. My service prepared me well to identify with my sons and all they are experiencing. It was fun to go to Carson's basic training graduation in SC where mine had been. Then it was fun to go to Caleb's graduation from his advanced training because it was at Fort Sill, Oklahoma! Small world, huh?
