R.B.'s Story

Though this is the perfect platform to try and impress you with the accolades I have received in life, I choose not to. Instead, (and with the utmost humility) I want you to know that your old friend/classmate revels in the gift of my wonderful memory as I recall all the little nuances, surprises, victories and disappointments that I experienced as a young teenager growing up with you in our (then) relatively safe and , œsleepy little Southern town of Fayetteville, NC. I have learned much over these many years just as I am sure you have. Among the many things I now treasure include my two sons, Roy (53) and Tim (51.) They have blessed me with six grandchildren (5 boys and one girl) and one great grandchild. Regrettably, I am now single and hoping to find the one Christ would have me march into the future with until HE calls me home. The love of my life, Mrs. Sylvia, died on July 31st, 2013 from a massive stroke. Though we had been divorced for nearly two years, her loss nonetheless touched me deeply. Among the many things I have learned since sharing high school days with you are: My greatest strength is accepting where i am weak and making the necessary changes. My greatest weakness is sometimes not using the areas where I am truly strong for God's purposes for the many folks He brings into my life. I am getting better at accepting both truths and acting aggressively to make the appropriate changes. MEMORIES There are many! I remember how great the cheeseburgers were at Bob's drive-in across from F.H.S. I recall how delicious the pizzas and spaghetti tasted from the Pizza Palace. I remember cherry cokes from the Carolina Soda Shop, and how cold the beer was at The Hillcrest Drive-in. Everyone used to circle Hillcrest two times and then back in so we could watch everyone else drive around twice before parking. I recall Gant shirts, Bass Weejuns, Howard and Whitakers Men's store, the county fair and the many other sites and sounds of a growing and friendly town. Nothing was prettier than the blooming dogwoods and azaleas, and nothing smelled sweeter than the gardenias (except Fayetteville girls.) I loved the baseball we played at Lamon Street Park and the teenage club up on the Rowan Street hill. Who could forget dancing to the Embers, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, the Catalinas and all of those other great bands at the National Guard Armory? What a town, what a time, what a life. What freedom! Regrettably, I also remember the embarrassment of losing a fight to an 85 pound Chimp named KoKo at the Ft. Bragg fair/carnival and sideshow which passed through each May.. Two soldiers from Ft. Bragg volunteered to box KoKo the Chimp. I remember being volunteered. I had to go first and it was $25 bucks to whoever could last two minutes. Good money for a high school kid back then. I lasted about 45 seconds. While dancing around the cage with him in a 10'x16' enclosure, Koko actually reached ar...Expand for more
ound behind me quicker than a hiccup, took two of his wiry monkey fingers and pulled the elastic pants (one-size-fits-all which they made us wear) and pulled them down below my knees. As I tried to cover the family jewels with my 16 ounce boxing gloves, he pummeled me into submission with his other free hand in front of what seemed like half the girls from Fayetteville High. I attempted to feign illness the next day so I could stay home from school. My mom made me go anyway even though I told her I had cancer, a heart attack and the first known case of leprosy in Cumberland County. True to form, Greg Ebert and the art class provided me with a two foot by three foot poster depicting my KoKo boxing experience that next morning which they titled (much to my chagrin) " R.B. the Ape Slayer". I thank you for attempting to assuage my ego with that wonderful gift of artwork my dear friends. Later, I spent a while on the varsity Marine Corps boxing team at Camp Lejeune, NC with former Heavyweight champ, Ken Norton (who actually beat Ali.) He never pulled my pants down, but he did knock sparks off the side of my head duriing sparring sessions. After 20 years in the Marine Corps, I settled on St. Simons Island, GA where I have been ever since. I have been in the real estate business for 37 years and have owned my company for 30. Though saved on Christmas day in 1966 on the side of Hill #327 while in Vietnam at a Billy Graham crusade, I backslid for many years. I rededicated my life to Jesus Christ over a decade ago. I attended the Walk to Emmaus Christian retreat several years ago; founded Rally.Point Men's Ministry (140 members of all races, denominations and 9 nations) 14 years ago, was the co-director of the Brunswick Christian Businessmen's group 8 years ago; and became an Evangelist years ago. God recently called me to become a pastor, so several months ago I became an ordained Southern Baptist Minister and now serve as the Pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Brunswick, GA. In fact, my sister in Christ, Donna Clayton Lloyd from Fayetteville attended the ordination ceremony. After a couple of years as a Minister, I learned that I am much better suited as an Evangelist than a Minister and I do that now. I am now totally retired from everything, single, don't smoke or drink, and am financially secure for the rest of my life here on earth. I love where I live, and especially being near my kids. I am content where I am in my relationship with Christ and seek to use my remaining days on earth to witness for Him and spread the Good News to all with holy boldness as commanded by "The Great Commission" in Matthew 28:19. I miss you - all of you. I vow to make the next reunion no matter what! I pray God's mighty blessings upon each of you and would relish the opportunity to stay in contact. Please email me through classmates and upon hearing from you will gladly share my cell phone number. R.B. Gentry
