Rachel's Story
Life
After graduating from Union High School in 1980 I attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music, a Bachelor of Music Education and 40 hours towards a Masters degree in music. While working on my masters I was a graduate assistant and taught piano class and applied piano. Prior to attending school at Union I attended Anadarko Jr High and 2 years at Andarko High School. (I am originally from Tulsa but my dad was transfered to a PSO power plant down by Anadarko for about 5 years)
Following all of that education I taught music and band for ten years in Arizona at Kayenta Intermediate School before becoming a firefighter. During my time in Kayenta I competed with Northeastern Az Weightlifting team. Hopefully I will come across a few former weightlifters here too! I joined the Kayenta Volunteer Fire Department and decided that I wanted to be a firefighter. I have been a firefighter for the City of Tulsa for 10 yrs now, since August 1998. I have worked on the west side at station 12, out by the airport at station 31, out north at station 19 and I am currently stationed at station 2 on the NW side of downtown Tulsa, 524 W Edison which is next to Owen Park. I try to keep up my musical interests and play the saxophone ...Expand for more
in the Tulsa Community Band.
During my 6 years at SWOSU I was a Gamma Phi Beta, serving a couple of years as president. I was also a Tau Beta Sigma and the first female to pledge Kappa Kappa Psi. I was active in Phi Beta Lambda and competed with the Parliamentary Procedures team for a few years. I played in various music ensembles and I played a few intramural sports. It was in college that I had my first Lhasa Apso, Romeo. I foster lhasa apsos and shih tzus for Animnal Rescue Foundation. Those of you who knew me in college will remember Romeo and his birthday parties. HA! He lived to be 14, he died when I was teaching in Kayenta. And those of you who know me from Kayenta will remember my 4 lhasas, Romeo, Juliet, Jazzie and Saki. Lhasas still remain my favorite breed and I foster shih tzus as well for Animal Rescue Foundation.
I miss my teaching job and I miss the kids. So those of you had me as a teacher email me. I would love to hear from any former students. I love my job as a firefighter/emt. I save lives, whether they be human or canine! Actually anything, really!! If it's hurt I'll help it and if it's on fire I'll put it out.
Any questions? Email me I'd love to get back in touch.
As I get more photos scanned I'll post them.
