RaeAnn's Story

May 1, 2014 Greetings, fellow Wildcats, from Paradise (aka St. Simons Island, Georgia) ! I hope the "Class of 74" is doing well. I was looking forward to seeing everyone at our 40th class reunion...how did that not happen??? My life has changed quite a bit in the past few years, but here are a few highlights. After graduation, I worked at Miller Brewing Company for six years. I moved to Athens, Georgia, the summer of 1980, and attended UGA for Music Performance, Voice and Piano. What else, right? ( I am the very same person I was when I was six, just a bit older and wiser.) I met my husband that first semester and a new chapter in my life began. We had the two greatest kids on the planet, Katie, a Pediatric Nurse, now 28, and Philip Jr, a Computer Specialist, 26. They're both employed college grads, but sadly, in no hurry to make me a grandmother. As of today, neither is in a serious relationship, but I'm hopeful. They're both too wonderful not to be in love! Anyway, while in Athens, I worked in Continuing Education, as a food service director and conference coordinator for the University, then did in-home day care when my munchkins were little. I started my own catering company in 1997. Music has always been the thing that made my heart happy, but the pay stinks. Since I also loved to cook (and talk), the catering thing was a good fit. Over the past thirty years, I have sung with Sweet Adelines, the local symphony choirs and church choirs, as well as directed plays and musicals for the local Theater Guilds and my kids' schools. Although they required a lot of hard work, I can honestly say I have thoroughly enjoyed my career choices. :) We moved to Valdosta, Georgia in 1997, where Phil and I worked/taught in Continuing Education until he accepted a position with the Board of Regents in Atlanta in 2003. After 23 years in Hooterville and Mayberry, it was difficult adjusting to the crazy Atlanta life, but both our kids live there, as does my sister, Jennine, and her husband, Bill Duelge (H.H.S.class of 76), and my dad. In 2012, Dr. Phil returned to Valdosta State University as VP and assistant to the President, and asked for a divorce. I moved to St. Simons Island, the most glorious place on earth, and am starting this stage of my life with new friends, a new home and a new job. Scary, but it's an adventure I'm enjoying. The beach is so beautiful and calming, and the sunshine just makes me smile! Come see for yourself...I'd love the company! September 14, 2016 Hello again, Wildcats! My sisters and brother-in-law recently returned from the Class of '76 40th Reunion, and I wish I had gone with them. They had such a wonderful time catching up with old friends, recalling the fu...Expand for more
n, crazy, unforgettable experiences of our high school years. I soon found myself traveling down memory lane, and as I paged through one yearbook after another, laughing at our lovely hairstyles and fashion choices, I felt a sense of longing for those days gone by. The late-night play rehearsals, the hours of quartet and show-choir practice, the ski club trips, not to mention the academic aspects of our high-school years all came back in bits and pieces. I can't believe that we're 60...so many years, so many great times! And now, friends, here we are, making new memories with our children and grandchildren. I am living on a lovely island with 12,000 fellow 'sun and sand' lovers. I have been home-schooling two families for the past three years, and nannying for two other families for the past five years...a very different life after thirty years in the University system. As of September 1, those jobs have come to an end, so another chapter of my life is about to begin. I'm still catering and fund-raising, mostly for my church, and both tasks keep me quite busy. We'll see what happens next! My invitation still stands...come see me any time...my door is always open! And let's get serious about putting together a reunion. June 10, 2023 Good morning Wildcats! It’s been ages since I’ve updated my profile, and now that it’s time to get serious about our 50th reunion, the time felt right. I’ve been living on my beautiful island for 12 years now, and except for having to evacuate three times during hurricane season(s), all has been quite wonderful. (Thankfully, no damage, ever. Phew!) Nannying, catering, event planning, home schooling, piano lessons, tutoring and fundraising still keep me way too busy, but that’s my fault. I have a very hard time saying no. It is what it is. Anyway, I’m all smiles today as I page through our yearbooks…photos and notes from what seems a lifetime ago, from friends I haven’t seen in decades. I can’t wait to catch up with each and everyone of you. Let’s pick a date for our reunion and get this ball rolling! I’ll be happy to help, both from here, initially, and later, up there. Until then…. October 10, 2023 Hello again Wildcats! So, I submitted my 1973 Yearbook to Classmates after noticing they didn’t have it in their cache of yearbooks. They sent it back to me a few weeks ago, so it shouldn’t be too long before we’re all able to update our profiles with photos from our junior year. Looking forward to our reunion, and very happy it’s going to be a summer event. After spending 40+ years in Georgia, my blood has thinned considerably…Not sure I’d survive a Wisconsin winter. Seriously. See you in August! :)
