Rafael's Story

Study of the eastern arts has always been a focus in part or whole, yet never would I have imagined teaching yoga. I started out in the 70's wanting to attend law school after a Poli. Sci. Bachelor's from Oswego. During my senior year there, life took one of those turns. I was given a scholarship to the Art Graduate program at the University of Memphis (Memphis State back then) and another a year later to the University of Michigan's MFA program. Once finished with school, my journey as an artist began. This stage of life was phenomenal. Wonderful mentors such as John and Suzanne Stephenson, creative colleagues whose talent humbled my own, critics who were very supportive and strengthened my resolve, a stint as Gallery director, teaching opportunities throughout SE Michigan and a lasting friendship with Robert Piepenberg among many. h art at the local community college. There I was quite comfortable with my duties in addition to helping build the Ceramics program, though very sad to be away from all my friends in Ann Arbor. I began teaching yoga in 1995 while still an adjunct at the college. After traveling to India in 2000, life took another turn. It now finds me teaching mainly at Your Wellness Connection and also blessed to be asked to take over as lead instructor for the Yoga My Heart study for atrial fibrillation, which I am sure will help spread the Iyengar yoga message. I veered onto this path in 1983, while in Ann Arbor, to help alleviate back pain. Unbelievably knowledgeable teachers, diligent students, supportive associates and a beautiful, kind loving wife are but a few of the richess I've encountered since. This is not to say that life has not had it's downs, but these are clearly offset. Peace!
