CLASS OF 1992

Rakesha's Story

After graduating In 1992 at 7 months pregnant I continued to further my education after my baby was born. It took me a while to figure out which career field I wanted to go into. I started out as a medcal assistant and certified phlebotomist. I did that for a few years and after having my second child in 1996 I then decided that I didn't want to do that anymore. I then became a pre school teacher and figured out that I really didn't like kids all that much. So In 2002 pregnant with my third child I decided that I would apply for employment with the City of Los Angeles since my whole family practically worked for the City Of LA. I went into the Sanitation Bureau where I worked in the call center and took complaints from unsatisfied irate customers daily and that soon became frustrating so I decided to transferred to the Department of Parks and Recreation after losing interest there I decide that I really wanted to work with an at risk population. I then began working at a level 12 facility for juvenile boys who were either on probation or were wards of the court. Im talking boys who raped they're siblings, who w...Expand for more
ere molested, who killed animals, and who had extreme behavior issues which they're parents were not able to deal with and had given up there parental rights. Well you get the picture. I was so good at this job I became the facility Supervisor after only 3 months. I worked sometimes 70 hour weeks or more and I had literally become exhausted. I was away from home and my children so much that it began to take a toll on me so I decided that that I would look for another job with a more traditional work week. I decided to go back into the medical field where I was a medical coordinator for clinical trials. After doing that for almost two years I realized that I missed working in the social services field and that was where my real passion was. Shortly thereafter the Lord answered my prayers with a job that was 8-5 working with parolees. I am now the Lead Case Manager for a company doing what I love making the some money I was making working those 70 hour work weeks! I have been truly blessed to enjoy a very fufilled life so far. I am doing well and proud to say that I got my start at Valley Alternative Magnet School.
