Raleigh's Story
Life
Graduated from Gahr in 1976 and went to UCLA. I ran away to Italy for one year between my Sophomore and Junior years - yes, I speak Italian - and ended up helping out in the great earthquake of 1978. After getting my BA in Psychology in 1982, became a systems analyst in the almost dead (now) language of APL, then flipped out and enlisted in the United States Navy. Ended up as a Quartermaster (navigation, helmsmanship, ship's deck log, etc.) on the USS Rentz, an Oliver Hazard Perry Fast Frigate with Guided Missiles (FFG-46). Went to Hawaii, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Philippines, and was the first group of ships to visit the PRC (Qingdao) in almost 40 years. Met my wife while in the Navy, lived in Long Beach and San Diego with her (when not deploying) then ran away together to Europe to study Italian language, music, history and culture at the Centro di Cultura per Stranieri in Florence, Italy (where we lived for 6 months). Had extended time in the UK (primarily Scotland), Sicily (primarily Siracusa) and Malta (NOT Yalta), and Paris (ah, Paris). Came back to LA to get my Masters Degree in Library Science (MLS) from UCLA and had my son, Isaac in 1991. Moved to St. Louis for my current position as a Reference Librarian and had a second child (Rachel born in 1997). I finally learned to drive in 1997!

School
I attended 16 different elementary schools, 3 different Junior High Schools, and two different High Schools (I started at Santa Fe High in Santa Fe Springs my first year and a half) in Washington, Oregon, and California.
Workplace
APL Systems Analyst 1982-1983; US Navy (QM2 on a Frigate) 1983-1987 (including 6 months in charge of the LB Naval Station Funderal Detail where I was a pall bearer, renderer of honors, flag folder and presenter for about 150 funerals - best work I ever did - I am now a funeral afficionado); 1991 to present: I'm a Reference Librarian at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL). I also teach, research, serve at the desk, and create lots of cool software.
Military
Enlisted in Santa Monica in 1983, got sent to Great Mistakes for bootcamp. Then off to Orlando for Quartermaster A school where I finished first in my class and got to choose where to go. Chose to be a plankowner on the USS Rentz (affectionately called the Igno) which was part of the Danger Ranger carrier group. Learned celestial navigation (my favorite most useless skill). Got shore duty 6 months early because my stepfather was dying of cancer, and got assigned to be the PO in charge of the Long Beach Naval Station Funeral Detail where I rendered the highest honors for about 150 soldiers (including 2 off of the USS Stark after it was hit by an Iraqi missile).
