Bio for Dr. Ralph K. Coppola

Dr. Ralph K. Coppola is an educator with experience at the K-12 through university levels. He has been involved in the design and implementation of science, technology and engineering education projects, involving under-served populations, incorporating collaboration among business and government and education sectors.
Dr. Coppola is currently Director of Worldwide Education at Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC). In this role he is responsible for expanding PTCÂs educational programs in North America and around the world, identifying and implement strategic educational opportunities, and building and shaping the next generation of customers by helping to develop the technology and engineering workforce of the future.
As Executive Director of the Space Day Foundation he administered Space Day, a massive grassroots effort, implemented by partners in business, government and education, dedicated to the achievements, benefits and opportunities in the exploration and use of space. He also administered the Space Day Web cast and the Space Day Design Challenges. The Space Day Design Challenges are hands-on projects that allow students to investigate, design, and build unique solutions to challenges similar to those encountered by professionals in the space program.
As Chief Educator at The GLOBE Program, Dr. Coppola was a faculty member at the College of William and Mary, worked at the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research.

ion of all education related activities of The GLOBE Program as they were carried out by individual Federal agencies, including NSF, NASA, NOAA and the EPA. Dr. Coppola coordinated all of the education related activities of The GLOBE Program that involved national and international science education organizations, as well as activities of other countries and their governments.
Dr. Coppola designed the first nation-wide workshop, to promote involvement of the Native Peoples of the Americas in Science entitled "Weaving Common Threads: Reaching Out to the American Indians and Native Peoples of Alaska and the Pacific Islands", in collaboration with Haskell Indian Nations University, Northern Arizona University, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and NASA. He designed the first US and African K through university training/research collaboration workshop, bringing together teams from six Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and representatives from ministries of education and the environment from nine Sub-Saharan African countries. The workshop was held at Howard University and supported by NASA.
He designed plans for statewide implementation of GLOBE in North Carolina, Texas and New York and Ohio. North Carolina included GLOBE content in Curriculum 2000, the state standards; Donald Nelson, the Texas Commissioner of Education, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Don Evans, Secretary of Commerce, to have GLOBE implemented in every school in Texas; In New York the Science TeacherÂs Association of New York StateÂs Board of Directors unanimously endorsed GLOBE, and GLOBE content was included as the core for the new environmental education standards in the state of New York; Ohio implemented GLOBE through the education technical centers and universities state-wide, using collaborative scheduling of training and sharing of human resources.
