Ralph A. Ackerman's Story
Life
I am a Professor of Zoology at Iowa State University in Ames, IA. I teach various kinds of physiology, typically premed, pre health professional and environmental/comparative types. I seem to be pretty good at it, though my courses are reputed to be very difficult and are approached with some trepidation by our students--will probably continue to teach for several more years until I can not remember my name. I do research on reptiles and especially their eggs and embryos. The interaction between the incubation environment and development is of special interest. I also work on soil climatology. I have been in Ames since 1981. I graduated from Rutgers U. in 1967, spent 2 years in the Army as an infantry medic and did graduate work at Duke and ...Expand for more
the University of Florida with post doctoral study at the SUNY Buffalo Medical School in the Physiology Department. I worked as a research professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego prior to coming to Ames. I have been married twice. My first wife died young (32, Leukemia), we had 2 daughters who are now entering their late 30's. My 2nd wife, was from Tel Aviv and we have 2 boys, the oldest, 24 graduated from Bowdoin and the youngest will be a junior at the Univ. of Chicago (where reputedly, fun goes to die). I remain active in the Ames Soccer Club and have coached a team of (currently) 9 yr old girls for the last 3 years. Never coached girls before, so this has been a wonderful experience---they are different than boys.
