Lawrence's Story
Life
Hey! Ram here. Im a college prep high school math instructor here in the Netherlands. Ive had quite the mix of experiences: the most have been interesting and challenging, if not at the least crucial to my personal growth.
After LWHS graduation and a brief one-year stint at Polk Community College, I volunteered for the US Navy's Enlisted Nuclear Engineering Program. I then completed two years of training: military training, basic electricity and electronics, tools (hand tools to oscilloscopes), radiation and health physics, reactor theory, plant operations and emergency response. I then volunteered for submarine duty.
While serving aboard the USS John Marshall (SSN 611) from 1988 to 1991, I faced the challenges of sometimes frequent and lengthy sea deployments and rigorous shipyard maintenance. I also met and worked with many very talented people, visited Caribbean and Mediterranean ports, and expanded my personal horizons. I estimate that I spent just over 365 days under water, the longest continuous submerged period being just under two months.
After my 6-year obligation, I attended Montclair State University in New Jersey. I graduated with a double BS in Physics and Applied Mathematics, with African American Studies and Comput...Expand for more
er Science as minors. I also thoroughly enjoyed the many facets of college life!
I married Véronique in January 1996. We moved to here to her home country in 1998 so that I could work on a M. Sc. in Applied Physics here at TU Delft and she could further develop as a Graphic Designer.
I was a Process Engineer here in the Netherlands at the Delft University of Technology. Initially I was to support the work of a Ph.D. candidate further developing the techniques for fabricating thin film multi-crystalline silicon-on- silicon solar cells. I then became the primary lithographic mask fabrication specialist. The DIMES group of technicians, engineers, and scientists also fabricates and researches IC components for internal and external use.
When the research grant money dried up for my position, I jumped whole-heartedly into teaching. Finally
Ive found something thats exciting and demanding enough to keep my spirit kickin!
Our son Rowan was born in March 2000 and daughter Lanka in 2004. I've played rugby: two years with the Norsemen (Montclair RFC) 1996-1998, two years with Thor (SRC Delft) 1998-2000, then with Rotterdam RC 2000-2004. I just started playing in a men's baseball league here with the Saints (Rotterdam-Hillegersberg) 2005.
