Randall's Story
Life
Got 2 cats: Baby and Stripes. Both strays picked up by my wife, Laura, and son, Daniel. Both spoiled! No, all four spoiled!
School
I would have never survived the '70s without my partner, my biggest crush ever and my helpmate, Laura.
Otto Zinser, at East Tennessee State, was my most favorite teacher of all time. He helped me figure out what being a scientist really means. What a teacher!
Don Jones, also at ETSU, guided me through the maze of graduate school. And my thesis would never have been finished without his guidance, motivation and encouragement.
Dr Charlie Walter, a clinical psychologist with the VA, has been a friend and inspiration for the past 31 years.
Dr Don Hier gave me a thorough internship, my first real chance at leadership, and structure in professional relationships.
Dr Bob Spangler and Dr John Stone, both also at ETSU, helped me focus on behavior as the unit of measure.
Their behavior demonstrated to me how effectively a team can navigate the most challenging organizational terrain by placing personal relationships above politics, funding, and other issues. I know it wasnt the lesson they intended to teach, but it sure was effective.
Dr (Lt Col, Ret.) Jimmy Mitchell helped me learn what I/O, Job Analysis, and Military Psychology are all about. He also taught me how to be an Air Force Officer and a professional.
Life has been a delightful series of relationships with smart, professonal people. Besides the eight listed above, there are literally hundreds of kind souls who have guided, challenged, and encouraged the best from me over the years. If I live a thousand years, I could never return as good as I have received.
College
After 1st 4 yrs in the AF, I came back to Roanoke to attend VWCC -- met & married Laura --- she's been the best room mate, friend, and partner I could ever hope for. She wanted to go to ETSU in Johnson City TN, so after the AA at VWCC, that's where we went. I did a BA in Psych & Sociology while she did a BSW -- Social Work. I took a MA in Psych while working at the local mental health center... We were poor but life was great! But in 1979 it was time to head back to the AF.
Workplace
In 1997 when I retired, I went to work for a consulting firm out of Houston (Holland and Davis, Inc). Then, an old AF Boss, Lt Col (Dr) Jimmy Mitchell,...Expand for more
hired me to coordinate a 3-yr project to do the Army's Occupational Analysis program. Jimmy died in year 2, and the work moved to Metrica, Inc. I've been with Metrica since May 2000, but have worked for others, too. Biggest outside contract has been for Operational Technologies Corporation, doing work for the AF Personnel Center. I've started my own company, Indepenedent Job Analysis LLC, but I just havent' had much time to spend in business development and marketing.
Not all work is paid: I also serve as Managing Editor of an electronic journal for work measurement research. "Ergometrika" was started by Dr Mitchell and Dr Bill Cunningham (NC State U) I served as the transition leader for quite a while after Dr Mitchell passed away. We now have new blood in the person of Mark Wilson, PhD, a professor of I/O Psych at NC State, who is taking on the executive / academic side as Executive Editor, and I'm doing business management for Ergometrika. Even though it is unpaid, we are collectively making a contribution to I/O Psychology's Job Analysis literature by promoting research and education into methods of work measurement. We hope to see our on-line journal grow!
Military
After ALHS in '66, I started at VWCC and took 2 yrs to decide I wasn't ready. Scott Agner and I went shopping for recruiters on my b'day. I joined the AF and spent 44 months in southern Italy and Anchorage. I left the AF in '72 to go back to school, and after completing my MA, rejoined the AF in '79 -- went through OTS and was commissioned in Apr '80. Laura and I had great assignments -- four times in San Antonio, a 2 yr exchange tour with the Canadian Forces (we lived in Ottawa), taught AFROTC at Memphis State, and spend 2 years in Montgomery at the AF Quality Institute. After all the time we spent in San Antonio (11 of the 17 1/2 yrs commissioned time) we decided to retire here. I went to work right away for an old AF boss who had started a consulting company, and have continued in government consulting work ever since.
Added 11/4/2009: Lately, I've been exploring the virtual worlds for entertainment and potential work... Really excited about use of virtual environment for corporate training, collaboration, conducting global and other distance meetings.
To quote one of my heros: "That's my story and I'm sticking to it!"
