Randy's Story
Life
Well, my travels led me to the desert in 1979 where I picked up a teaching degree from ASU. I have been teaching history and coaching baseball since 1982. My baseball travels have included 3 years in Russia, Australia, Hawaii, Czech Republic, Germany, Amsterdam and even a summer with the Alaska Goldpanners. I have two children; Markel a 33 year old daughter, and Dylan, a 31 year old son. I am involved with a great lady, Dana and still ride that old 1949 HD "45" from high school. I have also had a 51' Panhead and a 97' Fat Boy. As many of us I am eligible for retirement this year, but I am enjoying teaching ( I created a 20th Century Pop Culture class, mostly music/film) so will probably ride it out for a few more years. I would enjoy hearing from the LHS faithful, as I have only been back once in last 25 years.
01/28/08 Turns out I did retire in May '07, school district decided to pull medical benefits for future retirees, so I opted out, which allowed me to accept another coaching position in Europe. Leaving in March '08 for a 2-year job in Brno, CR. My team has a pub and restaurant so stop in!!
Return to U.S. late '08, worked for the Alaska Goldpanners in summer of '09, driving a bus, recreating the old barnstorming tours they did back in the late 60's. Dana and I drove the bus (1991 Bluebird school bus)from Fairbanks to Portland, where I picked up the team. We went to Kamloops BC and then made our way across the western US into Wichita for the NBC tourney, 24 games in 25 days. This spring I have been working as a professional scout for the Detroit Tigers and will return to Alaska to assist the GM of the Panners and try my hand at color and play-by-play broadcasts. Trying to hang on in America's old pasti...Expand for more
me.
Worked for the Goldpanners in 2011 and again in 2012, where I reprised the play by play for the internet streaming of the games. Have taken up fly fishing so summers in Fairbanks are great. Hung out alot with Rif Rafson these past two summers which was fun, going to the Howling Dog and hearing the Untouchables. Probably going back in 2013!
College
College?? UofA in Fbks, Seattle Univ, with my BA in Education from Arizona State Univ, as well as a Master's Degree from ASU.
Checking back in, January 2016. Continue to coach baseball where my latest gig has taken me to the Bay area. I am working/living in Marin County and coaching HS baseball at the 2015 California Division II state champions school, Redwood High. Will be living in Tiburon and spending my days in Larkspur. Get in touch if you are in the area!!
2019
Been back in AZ since 2016, continuing to coach baseball (four HS pitchers from our school rec'd college scholarships this year and will enroll this fall at Wash St., Grand Canyon U., Landers U (SC) and U of Wisconsin-Beloit. Coaching takes a lot of time, but find time to travel a little, do a little fly fishing and indulge myself with some red wine. My daughter Markel lives locally and is a case worker for troubled youth, My son Dylan is living in Morro Bay, CA and working for a commercial electronic door company as an installer. He has overcome some of life's most serious challenges to accomplish great things. I have 3 Harleys, including the old green 1949 45', a 1974 Sportster which is in the early stages of becoming a bobber and my father's last Electra Glide with a trailer. I am with Dana who will retire next year, let the fun begin!
Hope to make the 50th reunion as I have never attended one!
