Randall's Story

68 grad, 69 went down for the draft with Craig Rogers. They drafted Craig & refused me because I had a police record. That's the last time I saw Craig, he was killed in Vietnam. 3 months later, after they lowered the standards I was drafted on April Fools Day, 1969. I went to Germany as a clerk, a typist. That's the one class at East High that helped my future. The only reason I took the class was because it was mostly girls & it had no homework. In the Army in Germany I could not be promoted as a clerk, so they promoted me as a field radio repairman. It was more money so I said o.k. Vietnam called & said they needed a field radio repairman. When I got to Vietnam they asked for people who could type & I got a job typing orders for people coming home. Once again, my education at East High paid off. I got an early out for going to college, came home in January, 71 & went to Ellsworth College, in Iowa Falls. For awhile I lived with Harry Thulstrap & Doug McLenen (sp). College was like East High, a good time, not to learn. I went there for 3 years before I realized it was 2 year school. Only got arrested 5 times. I was not a hard core criminal, I was just taking charges for others. We would have keg parties, charge people money to get in & that would pay our rent. We got raided & the police charged all 5 of us $25, the first time. The second time they charged us $50 & I said it was my party & everybody else was gone. Everybody else paid the fine & it went on my record. It was cheaper for me & I did'nt mind the record. The 3rd time they charged me $75, everybody else paid, so o.k. Another time the biggest football player punched an older town man. He was going to play in a bowl game in Arizona & if they charged him he could'nt play. I said I punched the man, they charged me, the football player paid the fine & he got to play. All was happy. Another time John Tovar & I walked out of a tavern with a few cases of beer. We stopped in an alley to urinate, the police caught us with the beer & got us for being minors with alcohol. Once again all were happy. They did'nt get us for stealing the beer, just for being minors with beer. The early 70's, I hitchhiked across the country, San Francisco to Norfolk, Virginia. My first ride from San Francisco was my best ride ever, a very good ride. It was a woman from Hawaii who had some good Hawaian herb. At night she would bu...Expand for more
y some wine & we would smoke some breakfast for the brain & drink wine. I rode with her from S.F. to Colorado. I moved to Des Moines, Iowa, married a beautiful woman. She was a photographer & sometimes modeled for T.V. & magazines. I was considered a hard-core unemployable & the employment office sent me to a school to learn a trade, upholstery. I got a job with a very good shop in Des Moines, met an older man who was very good. I quit, started my own business & hired that man & he taught me very well. I had numerous photos of my work that was in the magazine Better Homes & Gardens. Back to the older man, he had been married 13 times to 11 different women. He married a couple of them twice. Never a dull day working with him & his stories. He came to work every day with a six pack of beer & he worked until noon or the six pack was gone, which ever came first. In 80, I got a divorce & I got into drinking & cocaine. In 82, I was in a car wreck & I was in a coma for 3 months. Ya don't have to slap me in the head twice to get my attention, I quit drinking & quit doing coke. I have even quit the deadliest drug of all, smoking cigs. I smoked for over 40 years. I even had Mr Vernon walk in the boys bathroom at East High when I was smoking & I got kicked out for 3 days. After I was in that coma my balance was bad & walking on snow & ice was hard. I decided I would rather wipe sweat off my head then fall, so I moved to Florida in 1993. I had a death in the family & I moved back to Waterloo in August 09. I know it will snow, so I should have just sent a card. I am now working on a deal where I will go to Jamaica for the winters. I have a friend who owns some apartments there & I will start off going for Jan., Feb. & March. If that works out good I will go for 6 months of the winter. I consider myself retired, I have not worked since I was in that accident. I collect Disability. Oldest friend was Dennis Steffeney. We started school at City View Heights grade school in 1955, the very first year City View opened. We went from kindergarten to graduation together. No trophies, just photos of my work that was in Better Homes & Gardens Magazine It's hot most of the year, shorts & tank tops. And, I now have a shaved head, Reality T.V., how unreal. T.V. teaches kids about sex & violence, so we have a very violent society. To relax, roll one & have breakfast for the brain.
