Randy's Story
Update #2:
OK thought I would be writing from Tucson, AZ but nope I am still in NM. Looking at a job here so I won't have to move my family (one more time). It's not permanent but will give my son and daughter some stability. Plus NM has this awesome Lottery scholarship which pays for college tuition at NM Colleges, so yes my children will attend college here. Actually my son is using it now and my daughter will in 3 more years. Can't say that I want to spend more time in Alamogordo, NM, but its what we do for our families.
Update:
As of 1 Sept I'll be officially retired from the Air Force. It's been wonderful, I've enjoyed it very much but putting in almost 23 years was about all I could do. Time to start growing my hair out again!
Life
I'm currently in the USAF and married to my wonderful wife, Rowena, for 19 years. I have 2 great children, Anthony 19 and Jessica 13. The Air Force (AF) has placed me in many challenging positions; I've been stationed in 3 states (Nebraska, Georgia, New Mexico) and 3 countries (Korea, Japan, Philippines). Although I have thoroughly enjoyed every bit of my time with the AF, I long for a visit to Vermont; it's been 15 years since my last visit. I'm currently in New Mexico. I plan on retiring in Tucson, AZ shortly after this assignment.
Military
If you'd have asked me in High School what my aspirations were I would have ...Expand for more
said I wanted to fly. After a close call with the Army (almost joined...they said I could fly helicopters!). I opted for the Air Force because it seemed at the time to fit me better, even though I didn't get to fly. After being in for 8 assignments and 21+ years, I still believe I made the right choice. I've spent most of my career in the far east, I've had assignments in the Philippines (where I met my wife), Korea and Japan. I've also had assignments in the US, at Nebraska, Georgia and New Mexico. Nope I never did make it to the north east in my career. That's just the way the dice were rolled. I've spent sometime away from family and friends with remote and temporary duty assignments, probably around 3 years total (not all at once). That's not such a big deal nowadays with the Army/Marines doing 3 or 4 tours of 12 to 15 months in Iraq and Afghanistan, but it is a lot for me. I think the best part of the military is the ability to meet so many fantastic people. In the military we're moving to a new assignment anywhere between 1 to 4 years. Some people work to stay longer at an assignment but I wouldn't want to. I enjoy meeting new friends and colleagues. I suppose you could say I know people all over the world now. Anyway my time in the Air Force has been a blast but its almost time to move on, I'll be retiring within the year. Time for a new beginning.
